The Sun Yat-sen Memorial Museum is a museum dedicated to honoring the Chinese revolutionary Sun Yat-sen, located within Maiko Park in Kobe, Hyogo Prefecture. The centerpiece of this facility is the 'Ijyokaku,' an octagonal Chinese-style pavilion completed in 1915. This building is one of the oldest concrete-block structures in Japan and is designated as a National Important Cultural Property. Its design, which harmonizes perfectly with the surrounding natural environment, holds immense value in the history of modern Japanese architecture.
The history of the main hall is deeply intertwined with the history of Kobe during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. During a period when Sun Yat-sen was staying in Kobe, he was sheltered by Kindo Go, the founder of Kawasaki Heavy Industries. Kindo Go was a prominent Chinese merchant who owned a villa called 'Shokai Besso' on the Maiko coast. The Ijyokaku was built in 1915 as part of this villa. Having survived difficult eras such as World War II and the Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake, the building was relocated to its current position in Maiko Park for preservation. The structure itself serves as a precious cultural heritage symbolizing the historical connections between Japan and China.
The most striking feature is the view that evokes the meaning of its name, 'Ijyokaku' (which suggests a shifting of emotions/affections). From the octagonal windows, you can enjoy diverse landscapes—the Seto Inland Sea, Mount Rokko, Awaji Island, and the view toward Shikoku—all from different angles. Inside, the decoration features restored 'Kintokarushi' (high-quality handmade wallpaper), recreating the luxurious interiors of the era. The exhibition rooms house numerous precious items, including the stone monument inscribed with 'Tianxia Wei Gong' (The World is for All) written by Sun Yat-sen, his writings, and personal belongings, allowing visitors to connect deeply with history.
While the scenery is beautiful in any season, the contrast between the blue of the Seto Inland Sea and the sky is particularly striking on clear days. Additionally, the museum regularly hosts 'Ijyokaku Concerts,' featuring traditional Chinese instruments such as the Erhu, Guzheng, and Pipa, or other traditional world music. Experiencing the serene atmosphere of a historical building accompanied by music is a truly special moment. Please note that during concerts, access to the first-floor hall may be restricted, so it is important to check the schedule in advance.
Beyond simple observation, the museum offers profound cultural experiences. The regular concerts provide a rare opportunity to enjoy the melodies of traditional instruments within the resonant space of a historical building.
