Shin Sapporo Sunpiazza Aquarium is an urban aquarium located within the 'Shin Sapporo Ark City Sunpiazza' commercial complex in the Shin Sapporo sub-center of Atsubetsu Ward, Sapporo. Its greatest strength lies in the seamless fusion of urban convenience and the wonder of an aquarium. The facility showcases approximately 10,000 exhibits representing 200 species, allowing visitors to observe popular animals like spotted seals, Cape penguins, and Asian small-clawed otters from a very close distance. Stepping inside, you leave the city bustle behind to enter a vibrant, rich marine ecosystem.
This facility has a long-standing history, having opened in 1982. Since 2009, through the management of the Sapporo Subcenter Social and Cultural Foundation, it has been operated by the Sapporo Subcenter Development Corporation. In March 2023, the facility was officially renamed to 'Shin Sapporo Sunpiazza Aquarium.' For many years, it has served as a community-rooted cultural institution, playing a vital role in conveying the natural beauty and marine richness of Hokkaido. As an urban aquarium, it continuously updates its exhibits and seasonal events, ensuring that there is always something new to discover for returning visitors.
The interior is organized into diverse exhibition areas themed around the warmth and coolness of the sea. The first floor features 'Warm Water Fish' and 'Coral Reef Fish,' where you can observe the breathtaking beauty of colorful tropical fish. A highlight is the 'Touching Pool,' a precious spot where you can observe starfish and sea urchins by hand, engaging your senses through touch. The second floor houses the 'River and Lake Fish' area, the 'Penguin Tank,' and the 'Spotted Seal' exhibition. The dynamic feeding demonstrations in the large 'Circulating Tank,' where 300 fish swim together, offer a truly powerful spectacle. The aquarium also covers a wide range of ecosystems, including Asian small-clawed otters, electric eels, and Amazonian water displays.
The aquarium is open year-round from 10:00 to 17:00. It frequently hosts special seasonal events, such as 'June Mini Projects' or exhibitions focusing on specific species. For example, there are often events related to 'World Otter Day' on May 27th. During the bright daytime hours, the facility is often lively with families and tourists. If you prefer a more tranquil observation experience, we recommend visiting in the morning right after opening or shortly before closing. Please note that the last entry is 30 minutes before the closing time.
The charm of the aquarium lies in its interactive and experiential exhibits. In the circulating tank, you can witness the energetic movement of fish during feeding times. The touching pool offers a rare opportunity to observe marine life directly through touch. Furthermore, the facility offers modern ways to enjoy the exhibits, such as AR avatar experiences related to the official character 'Sea Combat Squadron Penguin Ranger.' At the 'MARINE SHOP,' you can also purchase original character merchandise.
The aquarium is located within 'Shin Sapporo Ark City,' a large-scale commercial complex where you can enjoy shopping and dining simultaneously. This makes it easy to plan an itinerary where you visit the aquarium and then move seamlessly to nearby restaurants or shops. Additionally, its extremely convenient location—just a few minutes' walk from the Subway Tozai Line 'Shin-Sapporo Station' and JR 'Shin-Sapporo Station'—makes it easily accessible from central Sapporo.

No advance reservation is required; you can purchase tickets directly at the venue on the day of your visit. The facility is designed with accessibility in mind, and wheelchair movement is possible. To ensure a pleasant experience for all, please observe proper etiquette: observe the animals quietly so as not to startle them, and refrain from using flash photography near the tanks. While the layout is mostly step-free, please watch your step if visiting with small children.
