The Sumoto Castle Ruins are located on the summit of Mt. Mikuma on Awaji Island, Hyogo Prefecture. Originally constructed during the Sengoku (Warring States) period, the site underwent significant development, including the construction of stone walls and moors, as the castle changed hands among various lords. Today, it is a beloved historical site where visitors can observe ancient ruins while enjoying a spectacular view of the surrounding nature and the sea. A highlight of the site is the cafe located near the Honmaru (inner sanctum) area, offering a unique chance to rest in a deeply historical atmosphere.
This fortification was originally built by the Atake clan during the Sengoku period. Throughout the subsequent eras, under the rule of successive lords such as the Sengoku and Wakisaka clans, the stone walls and moats were refined into the forms seen today during the Edo period. A notable architectural feature is the use of breccia on the inner side of the walls and white granite on the outer side. The site consists of the historical remains of the "Kami-no-Shiro" (Upper Castle), a national historical site, and the "Shimo-no-Shiro" (Lower Castle), which is a designated monument of Sumoto City.
The most striking feature is the preservation of the stone walls and moats that utilize the natural topography. The traditional technique of stacking natural stones provides a profound sense of historical weight. From the heights of the ruins, visitors can enjoy an expansive panoramic view of Osaka Bay and the surrounding cityscape. Additionally, the site offers unique souvenirs that cannot be found elsewhere, such as magnets featuring the family crests of successive lords, crafted using traditional Awaji tiles.
The scenery changes beautifully with the seasons. In spring, visitors can enjoy the sight of blooming cherry blossoms set against the landscape. During the daytime, the contrast between the blue sea and the ancient stone ruins is particularly striking. The on-site "046 cafe" is an ideal spot for a midday break, operating from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM. Please note that the cafe is closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, so plan your visit accordingly.
Visitors can enjoy a leisurely stroll through the historical ruins to explore the ancient structures. At the "046 cafe," you can experience the flavors of Awaji Island with original blend coffees and sweets such as canelés and chiffon cakes made with local ingredients. Another unique experience is collecting items like the family crest magnets made from Awaji tiles. Furthermore, at the Awaji Cultural Museum nearby, you can collect stamps and "Goshoin" (temple/castle seals) related to the "Continued 100 Famous Japanese Castles" list.
Several parking areas are available near the ruins, including the Sumoto Castle Umaia-ato Parking, Sumoto Castle Ruins Parking, Mikuma Ikoi-ga-oka Parking, and Mikuma San-enchi Parking. Each offers different capacities and facilities. The nearby Awaji Cultural Museum is also an excellent place to deepen your understanding of the local history. The area is surrounded by rich nature and is located close to the coastal towns.
As the grounds include unpaved paths and stone steps, we highly recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes. For visiting the cafe or exploring the area, please ensure you have cash or a credit card ready for smooth transactions. If you intend to use a drone, you must comply with aviation laws and show consideration for other visitors. Please also be prepared for weather changes and check your belongings before heading out.
