Sumiyoshi Nature Park is a scenic natural park located along the shores of the Ariake Sea in Uki City, Kumamoto Prefecture. Covered by a lush forest of evergreen broad-leaved trees, this park has long been cherished as a place to preserve the local natural environment. Its greatest attraction is the spectacular display of approximately 2,000 hydrangea plants that bloom in early summer. As one of the top hydrangea viewing spots in the prefecture, the sight of colorful blossoms harmonizing with the deep green of the natural forest is truly captivating for all visitors.
Within the park lies the Sumiyoshi Shrine, which has long been revered for praying for the safety of ships navigating the nearby waters. The surrounding natural forest has been carefully preserved as a sacred grove to protect this shrine. Additionally, the park holds historical significance related to the local industry, featuring a monument dedicated to Ms. Drew, who contributed significantly to the development of modern seaweed cultivation. Every year on April 14th, the area celebrates the 'Drew Festival' organized by local seaweed cultivators, keeping the region's unique cultural heritage alive.
The primary highlight is the hydrangea exhibition held from late May to June. A diverse palette of blue, pink, and white flowers decorates the perimeter of the park. Visitors can also explore landmarks that symbolize the local landscape and history, such as the Sumiyoshi Shrine and the Sumiyoshi Lighthouse. The open, airy views provided by its coastal location are a defining characteristic of the park.
The most recommended time to visit is from late May to June, when the hydrangeas are in full bloom. This period is particularly popular with visitors coming to see the floral displays. In mid-June, the park occasionally hosts the 'Hydrangea Mandolin Concert,' allowing visitors to enjoy the seasonal beauty accompanied by live music. While daytime offers bright, natural light perfect for photography, visiting in the late afternoon allows you to experience a more tranquil, contemplative atmosphere by the sea.
Visitors can enjoy leisurely strolls through the rich natural environment while observing seasonal flora. Exploring the historical monuments and the shrine provides a deeper connection to the local culture. Please note that for the protection of the environment, the use of fire (such as barbecues or campfires) is strictly prohibited within the park.
Near the park, you can find the Keibita Seaside Road, Sumiyoshi Coast Park, and the Sumiyoshi Shrine. The entire area is deeply connected to the sea, offering many spots where you can feel the history of the local seaweed cultivation industry and enjoy the expansive views of the Ariake Sea.
Comfortable walking shoes and attire are recommended for exploring the trails. While there is a parking area available, please be aware that roads around the park become extremely congested during the hydrangea season (late May to June); using public transportation is highly recommended if possible. Please ensure you take all your trash home with you to protect the natural environment. As fire is strictly prohibited, please refrain from any activities involving open flames.
