Sumie Beach is a beautiful coastal area located in the northern part of the Hyuga-nada coast, officially selected as one of the "100 Best Beaches in Japan" by the Ministry of the Environment. Due to the unique rias coastline topography, the waves are exceptionally calm and the water depth is shallow. This makes it a safe and worry-free environment for families with small children to enjoy swimming. The coastline also features a vast, well-maintained lawn area, making it a perfect spot for seaside leisure, picnics, and relaxation.
This area is situated in the center of the Nichinan Coast Quasi-National Park. While preserving its rich natural scenery, the area has been developed into a leisure destination where local people and tourists can coexist in harmony with nature. Nearby facilities, such as "Beach Forest Sumie," serve as hubs for communicating the local charm through various outdoor recreational activities.
The greatest appeal of Sumie Beach is its gentle sea and the well-structured surrounding facilities. The beachfront is equipped with wooden picnic tables, allowing visitors to rest while enjoying the natural scenery. A notable feature is the "SUN Beach Sumie Bridge," a wooden bridge that connects the beach to the land-side facility area, allowing for smooth movement by foot or bicycle. The expansive grassy areas are widely used for family meals and outdoor play.
The peak swimming season typically runs from mid-July to August 31st. During summer, you can enjoy the vibrant blue sea and lush green landscapes. On clear days, the sunlight filtering through the trees onto the lawns creates a beautiful and soothing atmosphere. While the daytime is perfect for swimming and water play, the sun can be very strong, so we highly recommend using the shade or picnic tables for breaks.
Beyond swimming, a variety of leisure activities are available through nearby facilities. Beach Forest Sumie offers more than just the coast; it includes playgrounds, accommodation, tennis courts, and even a family-friendly aquarium, providing plenty of land-based activities. Additionally, the surrounding area is a popular spot for marine sports like scuba diving, offering opportunities to explore the clear underwater world.

When visiting for swimming, please prepare swimwear, a change of clothes, towels, and sunscreen. The facility is equipped with showers (paid), changing rooms, and restrooms. For smooth transactions, especially for using the showers, it is helpful to carry small denominations of cash (such as 100 yen coins). To protect the natural environment, please follow local etiquette by taking your trash home with you. If you plan to participate in activities like diving, we recommend checking with local operators in advance.
