Sumaura Park is a vast, scenic area covering approximately 103.8 hectares in Suma-ku, Kobe City, Hyogo Prefecture. Historically, this land was managed as an imperial forest, and today it is maintained by Kobe City. The park is characterized by its stunning topography, where the mountains meet the sea, offering visitors an incredibly open and refreshing atmosphere.
This location holds profound historical significance. It is famously known as the site of the 'Battle of Ichinoya' during the Genpei War. Nearby, you can find historical sites such as 'Tomsoduka,' a designated cultural property of Kobe City. The area also has ties to modern Japanese history; it was once home to the Suma Sanatorium, where the famous poet Masaoka Shiki stayed for treatment, and the land's history is intertwined with the imperial family, as the forest was part of the imperial estate before being transferred in the early Showa era.
The park is dotted with elements related to history and literature. You will find monuments dedicated to famous haiku poets and writers such as Yosa Buson, Matsuo Basho, Masaoka Shiki, and Takahama Kyoshi, allowing you to feel the poetic spirit of old Japan. Another significant structure is the 'Midori no To' (Greenery Tower), built as a symbol of reforestation efforts. Thanks to the varied terrain, visitors can enjoy elevated viewpoints that offer sweeping views of the ocean and the surrounding cityscape.
The park's character changes beautifully with the seasons. It is particularly famous as a premier cherry blossom destination during spring (late March to April), when the landscape is covered in blossoms. Since the park is open 24 hours a day, you can enjoy the tranquility of the early morning or the breathtaking colors of a seaside sunset.
Given its large scale, there are many ways to enjoy the park. You can take a contemplative walk through historical sites, enjoy a leisurely stroll while reflecting on classical literature, or simply relax in nature. The surrounding area also features Suma Coast and the Sumaura Ropeway, making it easy to combine your visit with other seaside cultural experiences.
The park is highly accessible via the Sanyo Electric Railway, which runs nearby. The surrounding area includes Suma Beach and the Sumaura Mountain Amusement Park, allowing for a rich, full-day sightseeing itinerary in Kobe. Other nearby attractions include 'Shiawase-no-mura' and the Kobe Nunobiki Herb Gardens.
Because the park features uneven terrain and slopes, we highly recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes.
