Suma Imperial Villa Park is a vast 82-hectare urban park located on the hills of Suma Ward, Kobe City, Hyogo Prefecture. The site was originally the location of the Otani Kōzui Villa (Mukogawa Villa). The park consists of a main garden featuring a Western-style garden and a botanical garden. It is a rare and precious space where one can simultaneously experience the remnants of historical architecture and the tranquility of modern urban nature.
The history of this park dates back to 1907 (Meiji 40). It began when the Otani Kōzui Villa was purchased by the Ministry of Imperial Household, with the garden being completed in 1914 (Taisho 3). Designed by Itto Fukuba, the garden is characterized by a style that fuses Western architectural elements with Japanese landscapes. Although much of the original imperial palace was lost to war damage in 1945, the garden has been meticulously restored and maintained to preserve its historical value. In 1967, the park was gifted to Kobe City to commemorate the marriage of the then-Crown Prince (now Emperor Emeritus) and Empress.
In the main garden, you will find a landscape where Western geometric beauty meets natural forms. Key highlights include terraces incorporating Italian garden elements, grand fountains, and cascading waterfalls. The central area features a large fountain and a statue of Poseidon, creating a scenic atmosphere reminiscent of Greek classical beauty. Meanwhile, the botanical garden area offers a diverse encounter with nature, featuring a conservatory for tropical and subtropical plants and gardens that change beautifully with each season.
You can enjoy different aspects of the park depending on the season. From spring to summer, strolling through the rose garden or the lush botanical garden is highly recommended. In autumn, the changing colors of the leaves are a sight to behold; notably, during weekends and holidays in the autumn season, the Japanese garden offers special night-time illuminations. For the best experience, visit in the bright morning hours to see the vibrant colors of the Western-style garden, or in the calm afternoon to relax within the tranquil atmosphere of the botanical garden.
As the park covers a very large area, the primary activity is a leisurely stroll to observe the natural forms and historical designs. There is a restaurant (Rest House) located within the main garden where you can enjoy a break while admiring the view. In the botanical garden area, you can observe rare plants inside the greenhouse. For families, the park includes a 'Children's Forest' and playground areas with wooden obstacle courses, making it a great destination for children.
The surrounding area of the park features several Kobe sightseeing spots. Near the coast, you will find leisure facilities like Suma Seaside Park and Suma Sea World, which are convenient for family trips. Additionally, the nearby Suma Derdera Temple adds to the cultural landscape of the area. The park's location, where the city meets nature, provides excellent access to central Kobe.
Since the park is quite large, we recommend wearing comfortable clothing and walking shoes. While there is a rest house, bringing your own drinks and light snacks will make your visit more comfortable.
