Sukayu Onsen is a historic hot spring located at an altitude of approximately 900m on the western foot of Mount Hakkoda in Aomori City, Aomori Prefecture. The spring is characterized by an extremely strong acidity, with a pH level below 2.0, making it a famous site for 'Toji' (traditional medicinal hot spring healing). In 1954, it was designated as the first 'National Health Resort' in Japan. The most iconic feature is the 'Hiba Sen-nin Furo' (Thousand-Person Bath), a massive bathhouse constructed entirely of cypress wood. The vast, gym-like space houses two large baths with different spring properties, offering a unique experience where the raw power of nature meets deep historical tradition.
The history of these springs dates back to the early Edo period, with legends suggesting the hot spring was discovered around 1684. Despite the harsh natural environment, many have visited this area for medicinal bathing for centuries. The region also has deep ties to botanical research; Fumi, the wife of a former innkeeper, famously collected high-altitude plants from the vicinity to donate to research institutions, contributing significantly to the study of Mount Hakkoda's vegetation. This history led to the establishment of botanical experimental stations nearby. While heavy snowfall once made access difficult in winter, improved snow removal systems in Aomori Prefecture now ensure year-round accessibility.

The most striking spot is the 'Hiba Sen-nin Furo.' Inside this immense wooden structure, you will find two baths with different characteristics. The 'Atsu-no-yu' (Hot Spring) bath uses the raw spring water directly to warm the body to its core. The other, known as 'Shi-bun-roku-bu-no-yu,' is a mixture of the spring water and water to adjust the temperature. Additionally, there is the 'Tama-no-yu' bath, which features separate facilities for men and women, including washing areas. These facilities allow visitors to enjoy the healing waters alongside the breathtaking scenery of Mount Hakkoda.
Sukayu Onsen reveals different faces throughout the seasons. The view of bathing amidst heavy snow from winter to spring is a quintessential experience. Day-use bathing is available from 7:00 AM to 5:30 PM. Please note that the 'Hiba Sen-nin Furo' has dedicated 'Women-Only' time slots: from 8:00 AM to 9:00 AM and from 8:00 PM to 9:00 PM. The lounge/rest area is open from 8:00 AM to 3:00 PM. We highly recommend checking these specific time slots before your visit.

Visitors can immerse themselves in the traditional 'Toji' culture. The area is often busy with travelers seeking the medicinal benefits of the strong acidic spring water, as well as hikers returning from the mountains. The spring is traditionally believed to help with various ailments, including neuralgia, rheumatism, skin diseases, and other chronic conditions. Relaxing in this natural setting offers a special way to disconnect from daily life.
As a volcanic hot spring area, Sukayu is surrounded by the rich natural environment of the Hakkoda mountain range. It is an excellent base for mountain climbing and seasonal nature observation. The surrounding landscape is perfect for scenic drives and walks, especially during seasons when the local flora is in full bloom.

Preparation is key for a comfortable visit. While the changing rooms are separated by gender, the main 'Hiba Sen-nin Furo' bath is a mixed-gender (konyoku) facility with a central divider/marker to maintain order. Please respect the rules of the mixed-gender area. For clothing, bring comfortable attire and change of clothes. Most importantly, during winter, heavy snow and ice are common; ensure you have warm clothing and non-slip, sturdy footwear for safety.
