Sukawa Kogen Onsen is a hidden gem located within the Kurikoma Quasi-National Park, situated on the border between Ichinoseki City (Iwate Prefecture) and Higashinaruse Village (Akita Prefecture). Nest{\u00adred at an altitude of 1,126 meters, the area serves as a gateway to the hiking trails of Mt. Kurikoma (Mt. Sukawa). The most striking feature is the abundant natural spring water, which flows at a rate of 6,000 liters per minute. The water is a highly acidic sulfur spring, characterized by its distinctive milky white appearance. Visitors can enjoy pure, undiluted hot spring water (gensen kakenagashi) that has not been diluted with water or artificially heated.
The area has a long history as a site for 'Toji' (medicinal hot spring healing). Historical records dating back to 873 (Jogan 15) mention the name 'Sukawa,' and the area has served as a healing destination since the mid-Edo period. While the flow of the hot spring once moved toward the Akita side, the current stream flows from the Yujiri-sawa area in Iwate toward the Iwai River. During the Edo and Meiji eras, the surrounding area was also known for its sulfur mining activities.
There are only two main facilities in this area: the privately-run 'Sukawa Kogen Onsen' on the Iwate side and 'Kurikoma Sanso' on the Akita side. Sukawa Kogen Onsen offers the 'Sukawa no Yu' large public bath, the 'Reisen' (Sacred Spring) which is known for its high temperature (approx. 45°C), and the 'Dainiyu' large open-air bath. Additionally, about 100 meters from the accommodation, there is the unique 'Oiran Buro,' a natural steam bath where visitors use a specialized mat (goza) for a traditional experience. The surrounding landscape includes the Sanuma Nature Observation Trail and scenic spots such as Sainori and the Nagaregahara Wetlands.
The scenery changes beautifully with the seasons. From spring to summer, lush vegetation lines the Mt. Kurikoma hiking trails, while autumn brings vibrant foliage. Please note that during the winter season (early November to late April), access is restricted as National Route 342 and Prefectural Road 282 are closed due to snow. The route from the Akita side (Prefectural Road 282) is particularly prone to long-term closures due to avalanche or landslide risks. The hot spring operating hours are 8:00 to 20:00 during the winter and 9:00 to 17:00 during the regular season.
Beyond soaking in the hot springs, the area is ideal for outdoor enthusiasts. Being located at the base of Mt. Kurikoma, many visitors combine their visit with mountain climbing. The surrounding nature trails offer views of unique wetlands like the Iwakagami and Shiratamanoki marshes. The water's composition is highly acidic (pH 2.3), containing iron and sulfur, which has traditionally been used to treat gastrointestinal issues.
Nearby destinations include the Ichinoseki Onsen cluster, as well as Maiko Onsen, Oyu Onsen (Okuyuzawa), and Kosanza Onsen. On the Akita side, you can explore the Kurikoma Bird Sanctuary and other facilities within the natural park.
