Suishobashi is a historic arch bridge spanning the Dojima River in Kita-ku, Osaka. There are several theories regarding its name, one being that the way the bridge's lights reflect on the water resembles the 'brilliance of crystal.' With a total length of 72.33m and a width of 9.09m, its heavy stone design is its most striking feature. Far more than just a transit route, it serves as a vital landmark in the city's landscape, beloved by photographers and tourists alike.
The roots of this bridge lie in the 'Dojima River Movable Weir' completed in 1929 (Showa 4) for river purification. While it originally functioned primarily as a water gate, it was later officially recognized as a bridge following legal procedures during renovations. It preserves a historical architectural style that reflects the modernization of Osaka. During the 1982 renovations, elements like planter boxes were added to harmonize with the landscape, resulting in the sophisticated appearance seen today.
The greatest charm lies in the geometric beauty created by the large central arch and the nine smaller arches positioned above it. This combination creates a sense of lightness despite the heavy stone structure. At night, the bridge is illuminated, creating a magical scene as the light reflects off the surface of the Dojima River. The contrast between the historic arch bridge and the modern skyscrapers of Nakanoshima creates a view that perfectly symbolizes the 'Water Capital of Osaka.'
During the day, you can appreciate the texture of the stone and the architectural beauty of the arches under bright sunlight. On clear days, the reflection on the water is particularly bright and refreshing. However, the most highly recommended time is at night. The illuminated bridge creates a much more emotional and romantic atmosphere than during the day. Regardless of the season, the night illumination is a highlight of any visit.
The area around Suishobashi is a well-maintained urban waterfront, perfect for strolling along the river. The bridge features planter boxes, providing a touch of nature and a sense of calm amidst the urban bustle. Because the scenery is so beautiful, it is a popular subject for both professional and amateur painters and photographers, making it an ideal environment for landscape photography.
The Nakanoshima area, where Suishobashi is located, is a fascinating district where historical buildings and modern skyscrapers coexist. Nearby, you will find the Osaka Central Public Hall, various museums, and cultural facilities. Beyond the bridge, a riverside promenade continues, allowing you to enjoy a walk alongside local cafes and restaurants.

While English support can be expected at larger facilities and tourist sites in the Nakanoshima area, there are no staff members stationed at the bridge itself.

We recommend comfortable walking shoes for strolling. If visiting at night to see the illumination, bring clothing suitable for temperature changes.
