Mizunomori Aquatic Plant Park is a specialized botanical park located along the shores of Lake Biwa in Kusatsu City, Shiga Prefecture. Based on the concept of 'Interaction between Plants, People, and Water,' the park cultivates and displays a wide variety of aquatic plants against the backdrop of Lake Biwa's rich natural environment. The facility includes the 'Lotus Pavilion' (a greenhouse), outdoor areas for seasonal blooms, and facilities for resting and dining. It is a beloved destination where visitors can experience the diversity of aquatic life up close.
Opened on July 13, 1996, this park is a long-standing institution that will celebrate its 30th anniversary in 2026. Leveraging its location adjacent to Lake Biwa—Japan's largest lake—the park has worked to preserve and display aquatic plants while coexisting with the local ecosystem. Beyond being just a park, it serves as a center for nature education and a space for both locals and tourists to connect with the environment. Over the years, it has maintained expertise in cultivating lotuses and water lilies, delivering the changing beauty of nature to visitors every season.
The park offers captivating displays that change with the seasons. A major highlight is the 'Lotus Pavilion,' a greenhouse where you can observe a diverse range of lotus and water lily species from both Japan and abroad. The outdoor wetland gardens and seasonal flower areas are also highly recommended. For instance, in early summer, the 'Water Lily Exhibition' showcases over 150 varieties of water lilies. Depending on when you visit, you can enjoy different scenery, such as Iris flowers in early summer or Wisteria blossoms, offering a unique visual experience every time.
Because the primary flora changes with the seasons, every visit offers a different experience. In spring, you can enjoy fresh greenery and Wisteria. In early summer (around May to June), the water lilies and Irises are at their peak, making it an ideal time to see a vast collection of hardy water lily varieties. In the height of summer, the lotus colonies create a stunning landscape. Daytime visits offer vivid colors for photography, while late afternoon is perfect for enjoying the tranquil, serene atmosphere by the water.
Visitors can do more than just observe; you can participate in seasonal events and special exhibitions. These include focused displays like the 'Water Lily Exhibition' or 'Iris Exhibition,' and sometimes even stamp rallies. The park also features an on-site restaurant where you can enjoy a meal while gazing at the beautiful scenery. These seasonal events allow for a deeper engagement with the world of aquatic plants through both sight and leisure.
The park is situated on the eastern shore of Lake Biwa, near the Karasuma Peninsula. The surrounding area is perfect for driving or cycling along the beautiful lakeside scenery. It is easily accessible via public transport (including the Ohmi Railway) or by car, making it easy to combine a visit with other sightseeing spots in Shiga Prefecture. Exploring the lakeside paths nearby is also a wonderful way to enjoy the natural landscape.
As the park features large outdoor walking areas, please dress according to the season. Especially in early summer or summer, we recommend bringing hats and sunscreen to protect against heatstroke and strong sunlight. While the paths are well-maintained, please be careful when walking near the water and plants to avoid damaging them. Please follow all local rules and guidelines while using the facilities.
