Jigokunuma is a highly mystical pond located at the foot of the Hakkoda Mountains in Aomori Prefecture. It is a volcanic crater formed by an explosive eruption approximately 800 years ago, covering an area of about 4,500 m². The most striking feature is the emerald green water surface accompanied by rising sulfurous gases. The area is dotted with vents that remind visitors of the ongoing volcanic energy, with highly acidic hot water bubbling up from the ground. It is a place where the raw power of the Earth meets a serene, quiet beauty, creating a one-of-a-kind scenic spot.
The topography of this area was shaped by the volcanic activity of the Hakkoda Mountains during the Quaternary period. The pond, believed to have been born from an explosion 800 years ago, serves as a living testament to the continuous energy of the Earth. Nearby, there are thirty-three Kannon statues placed to pray for the safety of all living things in the Hakkoda region. The area also holds unique local cultural traces, such as the 'Manju-fukashi' tradition, reflecting how local people have lived in harmony with the harsh yet beautiful natural environment and its spiritual significance.
The greatest charm of Jigokunuma lies in its unique colors and textures. Under a clear sky, the contrast between the shimmering emerald green water and the surrounding lush greenery or vibrant autumn foliage is truly breathtaking. Visitors can observe the rising sulfurous gases and the desolate landscape where specialized lichens grow. Because the water is highly acidic and cannot support fish, the clarity and unique texture of the pond leave a lasting impression of nature's wonders. Jigokunuma displays different faces throughout the seasons. In spring and early summer, the contrast between the fresh green forest and the emerald water is refreshing and full of life. In autumn, the surrounding mountains turn brilliant shades of red and orange, creating a mystical landscape alongside the colorful foliage. We highly recommend visiting on clear mornings when the water acts like a mirror reflecting the scenery, or during times when the steam is most visible. Please note that during winter, access routes may be restricted or closed due to heavy snowfall.

Since it is only about a 10-minute walk from Sukayu Onsen, it is an ideal way to experience the energy of the Earth after relaxing in a hot spring. The experience of feeling the 'pulse' of the Earth through the volcanic remnants is something you won't find elsewhere. Jigokunuma is part of the magnificent Hakkoda mountain range tourism area. The historic Sukayu Onsen is located very close by, making it an excellent base for both bathing and exploring. Since it is located along the popular 'Gold Line' driving route, a perfect itinerary would be to combine a visit to the pond with nearby hot spring towns, natural campsites, and the various hiking trails of the Hakkoda mountains. Combining nature and hot spring culture allows you to fully experience the charm of Aomori.
As this is a natural environment, we strongly recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes such as sneakers or trekking shoes. The terrain can be uneven and unpaved, so please watch your step. Because of the volcanic activity, sulfurous gases may be present; please dress according to the weather and your physical condition. While photography is free, please respect the environment by not damaging plants or geological formations. Additionally, please respect local customs and the spiritual significance of the area (such as the Kannon statues) by maintaining a quiet and respectful presence.
