Suigo Sahara Ayame Park is a municipal botanical garden located in Katori City, Chiba Prefecture. Serving as the gateway to the Suigo Tsukuba Quasi-National Park, it creates a harmonious landscape of water and greenery. As one of the largest iris (Ayame) gardens in Japan, it offers a different botanical face every season. A highlight of the park is the Sappa boat tour, which allows visitors to observe the scenery from a low perspective, very close to the water's surface, providing a truly unique experience.
The region has a rich history of prosperity through water transport via the Tone River during the Edo period. Suigo Sahara Ayame Park plays a vital role in preserving and presenting these traditional waterside landscapes to the modern era. The park's layout, featuring islands, bridges, and waterways that replicate traditional Japanese scenery, allows visitors to feel the deep cultural heritage of the Suigo region.
The park features a diverse range of plants that reach their peak at different times. During the 'Ayame Festival' from late May to June, approximately 1.5 million irises from 400 varieties (including Edo, Higo, and Ise types) bloom in spectacular fashion. From July to August, the 'Lotus Festival' takes place, showcasing the beauty of over 300 varieties of lotus flowers. Additionally, in early May, the 70-meter-long 'Wisteria Tunnel' reaches its peak, adding a touch of seasonal elegance to the park.
The best time to visit depends on the seasonal beauty you wish to see. For the most stunning iris displays, visit between late May and June. For the lotus flowers, which bloom beautifully in the early morning, the period from July to August is ideal. In early May, you can enjoy the enchanting wisteria flowers. While opening hours vary by season, the park often opens early during event periods, so visiting in the cooler morning hours is highly recommended.
A must-do activity is the Sappa boat tour, where you can glide through the waterways in a small traditional boat. This provides an intimate view of the irises and lotus flowers from near the water level. For families, the 'Mori no Asobiba' (Forest Play Area) offers a space to enjoy nature with grass lawns and large slides. The park is also pet-friendly, featuring a dedicated dog run for those traveling with their beloved pets.
The surrounding area features the 'Sawara Townscape,' which retains the atmosphere of the Edo period. As a preserved group of important traditional buildings, it is a perfect base for historical exploration. Nearby, you can also visit the Ino Tadataka Memorial Museum and his former residence, making it easy to combine a nature walk with a cultural tour.
Since the park is a natural waterside environment, we recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes. Clothing that allows for easy movement is also ideal, especially if you plan to take a Sappa boat ride. The park is equipped with multi-purpose toilets, including diaper-changing stations. To protect the natural environment, please refrain from picking or removing any plants.
