Suigo Itako Ayame Garden is a scenic park located in Itako City, Ibaraki Prefecture, renowned for its breathtaking displays of irises and Japanese irises. Established in 1976, it has become an iconic landmark of the Suigo region. The garden features approximately 1 million plants across 500 species, including improved varieties of native species originally found along the banks of the Tone River. As early summer arrives, the garden transforms into a vibrant tapestry of color, offering a harmonious blend of water and botanical beauty.
The region has long flourished as a vital hub for water transport. The garden preserves the local heritage through various monuments, such as the 'Itako Kasa Memorial' (statue of Itaro) and the 'Itako Bride' monument. Additionally, the bridges spanning the Maekawa River—including Shian Bridge, Suiumon Bridge, and Ajou Bridge—are part of the famous 'Twelve Bridges of Maekawa,' preserving the traditional waterside culture and landscape. As evening approaches, the atmosphere becomes even more tranquil and poetic, perfect for a peaceful stroll.
During the 'Suigo Itako Ayame Festival,' you can witness unique local traditions such as the 'Yomeiri-bune' (traditional wedding boat) procession, the 'Ayame Odori' dance, and 'Itako Hayashi' musical performances. You can also enjoy a sightseeing cruise on a 'Robune' (hand-rowed boat), allowing you to view the flowers from a low-angle, water-level perspective. The park is part of the Suigo Tsukuba Quasi-National Park, surrounded by rich natural landscapes. The surrounding area features scenic walking paths and historical sites.
