Sugatani Tatara Yamauchi is a collective name for the district where people once lived and worked in the traditional Japanese ironmaking method known as "Tatara ironmaking." Located in the mountainous region of Unnan City, Shimane Prefecture, this site is famously known as one of the models for the "Tatara field" depicted in the animated masterpiece, "Princess Mononoke." The historical landscape, featuring traditional ironmaking structures and buildings, has been carefully preserved to showcase the history of producing high-quality steel from iron sand.
