Suganuma Gassho-zukuri Village is located in the Gokayama area of Toyama Prefecture and is home to traditional 'Gassho-zukuri' style houses. Situated on the river terraces of the Shogawa River, the village still maintains nine active households living in these historic structures. The landscape, where unique architectural styles developed to adapt to harsh natural environments blend seamlessly with the rich seasonal beauty, never fails to enchant visitors.
This village developed within a rigorous natural environment characterized by heavy snowfall. The Gassho-zukuri houses feature robust structures designed to withstand heavy snow, with interior spaces rationally designed for activities like sericulture (silkworm rearing) and saltpeter production. The way of life and the wisdom of coexistence with nature, passed down through generations, form the very foundation of the village's architecture and culture.
One of the greatest attractions is the night illumination event. From sunset through the evening, the sight of the illuminated houses reflected in the water of the rice paddies—known as 'Sakasa-Gassho' (inverted Gassho)—is truly mystical. Additionally, visitors may experience the local traditional sounds through performances of Gokayama folk music. The scenery changes beautifully with each season, ensuring a new discovery every time you visit.
While the village is charming year-round, the night illuminations are a must-see. The lights, which typically run from sunset until 8:30 PM, highlight the village's beauty in the quiet of the night. Specific events like 'Haru no Yoi' (Spring Evening) allow you to enjoy the lights amidst the fresh greenery of spring. Whether it is the heavy snow of winter or the lush greenery of summer, the landscape offers a completely different atmosphere depending on the season.
Traditional folk music is sometimes performed within the village. For example, the Gokayama Folk Song Preservation Society may hold performances on special stages. On certain event days, you might even encounter unique programs that blend tradition with modern elements, such as synthesizer performances or song live shows. As these activities depend on weather and specific schedules, it is highly recommended to check details in advance.
The Gokayama area is home to several other villages with significant historical landscapes. The surrounding environment is rich in nature, with mountains and rivers that are perfect for driving or hiking. When visiting Suganuma, you can feel the deep cultural connections unique to this region alongside the natural beauty.
Please wear comfortable walking shoes when visiting. This is especially important for night illuminations, as paths can be dark and uneven. When using the parking lot, a preservation fee (1,000 JPY for standard cars) is required. As this is a living community, please observe the residents' privacy and keep noise levels low. Since many payments in this area are cash-based, we recommend carrying Japanese Yen.
