The Sounkyo Onsen Hyobaku Festival is a spectacular winter event held on the banks of the Ishikari River in Sounkyo, Kamikawa Town, Hokkaido. Since its inception in 1976, this historic festival has become a beloved tradition. The venue spans a vast 10,000 square meters, utilizing the intense cold of the Hokkaido winter to construct massive, impressive ice structures and sculptures. As night falls, these frozen creations are bathed in a kaleidoscope of colorful lights, transforming the entire area into a magical, glowing wonderland.
The festival began in 1976, originally conceived under the guidance of sculptor Toshihiro Takenaka. Having celebrated its 30th anniversary in 2005, the festival continues its legacy, with 2025 marking a significant 50th-anniversary milestone. It has evolved into a unique cultural phenomenon that celebrates the natural freezing environment of the Ishikari River banks, turning the harsh winter climate into a source of artistic beauty.
The venue is filled with diverse architectural wonders made entirely of ice. A standout feature is the 13-meter-high ice observatory, which offers a breathtaking 360-degree panoramic view of the entire illuminated site. Visitors can also experience the 'Hyobaku Shrine,' a unique ice structure where coins can be placed into a specialized offering box integrated into the ice. Other attractions include ice tunnels, snow huts (kamakura), and various ice sculptures inspired by nature, all beautifully lit to create a dreamlike atmosphere.
The festival typically runs from late January through March. Because the primary attraction is the colorful illumination, it is highly recommended to visit during the evening and night hours. Depending on the specific year and schedule, visitors might enjoy special events such as opening ceremonies, traditional 'Hyobaku Taiko' drumming performances, lucky draws, or even celebratory fireworks displays.
Visitors can enjoy walking through illuminated ice tunnels, ascending the ice observatory for a bird's-eye view, or paying respects at the ice shrine. There are also various stalls and shops within the venue where you can purchase local souvenirs. The experience and available activities can vary depending on the specific season and the festival's annual program.
The festival is located right next to the Sounkyo Onsen hot spring district. After enjoying the magical night at the festival, visitors can relax and unwind in one of the many nearby hot spring facilities (onsen). Many travel agencies also offer specialized tour packages that include both the festival and hot spring stays.
As the venue is located on the Ishikari River banks, you will be in an extremely cold environment. Proper winter gear is essential: heavy coats, gloves, scarves, and hats are a must. Since you will be walking on snow and ice, please wear sturdy, non-slip footwear. Cash is generally required for purchases at the souvenir and food stalls.
