Sounji is a prestigious temple of the Rinzai sect's Daijoji branch, located in the Hakone Yumoto area of Kanagawa Prefecture. It served as the family temple for the Hojo clan, the famous rulers of Odawara Castle, and the development of the surrounding Hakone Yumoto town was deeply connected to this temple's history. Within its grounds, visitors can find precious cultural assets that preserve the essence of the Sengoku (Warring States) period, alongside a beautiful karesansui (dry landscape) garden, offering a moment of profound tranquility.
The history of Sounji dates back to 1521 (Daiei 1). It was established by Hojo Ujihisa, the son of the first Hojo Soun, following his father's wishes. The temple faced significant hardships, including a period of destruction during the Siege of Odawara by Toyotomi Hideyoshi in 1590, but it was successfully restored in 1627 by the monk Kikkei. More than just a religious site, Sounji has stood as a vital symbol of the Hojo clan's legacy and has grown alongside the local community for centuries.
The temple grounds house numerous precious cultural assets. A standout feature is the karesansui garden, believed to be associated with Hojo Nagatsuna (also known as Gen'an), a prominent figure of the Sengoku period. Visitors can also admire the "Hojo Soun Portrait," a designated National Important Cultural Property, as well as other historical portraits and ancient bells that evoke the weight of history. Near the Sanmon gate, you will find a large, ancient bell said to be related to the "One-Night Castle" of Ishigakiyama during Toyotomi Hideyoshi's invasion of Odawara.
Sounji reveals different faces throughout the seasons. In early summer, the lush evergreen broad-leaved forest (a Natural Monument of Kanagawa Prefecture) behind the temple is particularly beautiful, accompanied by the sounds of the Hime-haruzemi cicadas. For those seeking a moment of quiet prayer, visiting in the clear morning air is highly recommended. The grounds also house the graves of the five generations of the Hojo clan.
Visitors can enjoy a slow stroll while contemplating the historical architecture and exquisite gardens. Observing the dry landscape garden is an excellent way to find inner peace and connect with traditional Japanese aesthetics. Please note that access to the main hall (Hondo) is a special event that only occurs on specific days in November; planning your visit around this time allows for a much deeper historical experience.
Located in the heart of Hakone Yumoto, Sounji is surrounded by numerous tourist attractions. After exploring the temple, you can wander through the nearby hot spring town, visit Hakusan Shrine, or enjoy the historic streetscapes. The area is also highly convenient for travelers, with many accommodations and cafes nearby.
As the grounds contain gravel paths and some stairs, comfortable walking shoes are highly recommended. Please maintain a quiet and respectful demeanor during your visit. Regarding Goshuin (temple stamps), please check in advance as they may not be available. Since access to the main hall is limited to specific periods, please plan your visit accordingly.
