Sotobori Park is a unique green space located in the Chiyoda and Shinjuku areas of Tokyo. It was developed utilizing the former outer moats of Edo Castle (specifically the Ushigome, Niimi, and Ichigaya moats). The park features a long, slender shape stretching approximately 2km from the vicinity of JR Iidabashi Station to the south of Yotsuya Station. Because it preserves the traces of the defensive moats that once protected Edo Castle, it serves as a precious green lung within the dense urban center. Situated near major business districts and schools, the park is a popular daily destination not only for tourists but also for local office workers and students seeking a moment of rest.
The foundation of this park lies in the 'Sotobori' (outer moat) system of Edo Castle. The moats, which once functioned as a vital part of the Edo-period defense system, have been repurposed into a modern urban park. As part of the designated historical sites of the Edo Castle outer moat, the landscape preserves the topography and structural essence of the past. This creates a fascinating juxtaposition where historical vestiges are seamlessly integrated into the rhythm of modern Tokyo life.
The greatest charm of the park is the scenic promenade that follows the water's edge, offering much-changing seasonal landscapes. The cherry blossom trees are particularly spectacular in the spring, providing a breathtaking tunnel of flowers for walkers. Additionally, near the west side of Yotsuya Station, you will find the 'Sotobori Park General Ground,' which includes sports facilities such as a baseball field with floodlights and tennis courts. Although the park is divided into several sections by the JR Chuo Line tracks, each area offers a distinct and enjoyable atmosphere.
The most striking transformation occurs during the cherry blossom season from March to April. During this time, the park becomes a major destination for 'Hanami' (flower viewing), with the Chiyoda City even providing temporary waste disposal areas to accommodate the crowds. Daytime visits in spring are ideal for enjoying the sunlight filtering through the blossoms. For those interested in sports, the area near the general ground is active in the evenings due to the lighting equipment. Regardless of the season, the park is a wonderful place for a midday stroll or a relaxing break from work or study.
The park is primarily designed for walking and relaxation. Walking along the riverside promenade allows you to enjoy a tranquil water view amidst the skyscrapers. For more active visitors, the sports area near the general ground offers space for baseball and tennis. Observing the daily routines of local office workers and students taking a break is also a charming way to experience the authentic, local atmosphere of the city.
The park is conveniently located near major transit hubs, including Iidabashi, Ichigaya, and Yotsuya stations. From the Iidabashi side, a scenic path runs along the embankment, separated by the JR Chuo Line. The surrounding neighborhood is a vibrant mix of modern office buildings and educational institutions, such as Hosei University, making the park a vital urban oasis.
For a comfortable experience, we recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes and casual clothing. As this is a public space, please be mindful of your surroundings, particularly regarding noise and litter. During the peak cherry blossom season, please use the designated temporary trash stations if provided. Entry to the park is free and open to the public, and no special reservations are required for general strolls or using the public paths.
