Soni Highlands, located in Soni Village, Uda District, Nara Prefecture, is one of Japan's most iconic natural scenic areas. The plateau spreads across the western slopes of Mt. Kuruson (1,038m) and Mt. Kame (849m), characterized by its vast, open grasslands. The landscape undergoes dramatic transformations: in spring, traditional controlled burning takes place; in summer, a lush green carpet covers the earth; and in autumn, the silver grass (Susuki) turns into a shimmering golden sea. It is a sanctuary where you can escape the city bustle to feel the breath of nature and the sound of the wind.
The region is deeply rooted in a culture of living in harmony with nature. For instance, the "Okame Pond" located halfway up the plateau is the subject of the local "Okame Legend." Additionally, every year in mid-March, controlled-burning (yamayaki) is performed to maintain the grassland ecosystem. These traditional land management practices are essential in shaping the seasonal beauty that visitors enjoy today.
The greatest charm lies in the shifting expressions of the plateau. The autumn season is particularly breathtaking, as the sunlight hits the vast fields of silver grass, making them glow in shades of silver and gold. Near Okame Pond, you can also observe rare plants unique to wetland environments. For a unique souvenir, the Soni Post Office offers special "Fukeiin" (scenic postmarks) featuring motifs of the Soni Highlands and Okame Pond, perfect for collectors.
Soni Highlands offers distinct charms throughout the year. From spring to summer, the vibrant green grass creates a refreshing atmosphere, ideal for hiking. Autumn, specifically the silver grass season, is the peak highlight when most visitors arrive. While the silver grass reflects light brilliantly during the bright daylight hours, the scenery is also incredibly beautiful and serene under the soft light of dusk.
Leverage the natural surroundings for a relaxing hike. Nearby facilities like the "Mitsue Highland Farm" allow you to fully immerse yourself in the rural atmosphere. For a more immersive stay, the "Cottage Seisanso" offers the chance to enjoy barbecues amidst the vast nature, providing a special and open-air experience for families and friends.
Various spots to enjoy nature are scattered around the plateau. These include the Soni National Youth Center, Soni Highland Farm Garden, and the "Soni Kogen Onsen Okame-no-yu," where you can relax in a hot spring after your activities. If you wish to stay overnight, there are several cottage options available to keep you close to nature.
As this is a natural area, we highly recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes and practical clothing. Since temperatures can fluctuate depending on the season, please bring layers to adjust to the weather. Most importantly, to protect the environment, the use of fire is strictly prohibited. Please ensure you take all trash home with you and respect the local flora and fauna to preserve this beautiful landscape.
