Suryozan Observatory is a scenic viewpoint located in Muroran City, Hokkaido, at an altitude of approximately 200 meters. The most striking feature of this location is its unobstructed 360-degree panoramic view. On clear days, the sense of openness is breathtaking, allowing visitors to see far-reaching mountains and the ocean. It is not just a place to see the city of Muroran, but a spot to immerse yourself in the vast natural beauty of the region.
The mountain carries a fascinating historical name. In 1872, an American named Warfield, who served as a land surveyor and road builder, climbed this mountain to survey the area for the construction of the Sapporo main road. Because of his survey work, the mountain was once called 'Kento-yama' (Observation Mountain) before being renamed 'Suryozan' (Survey Mountain). The area also holds cultural significance; in 1931, the famous poet couple Yosano Akiko and Yosano Tekkan visited this area, and poems describing the scenery of that time remain as a testament to its beauty. It is a place where nature and history intersect.
The TV tower at the summit serves as the iconic symbol of this location. Since 1988, a unique illumination system has been in place. By submitting a request with a message, the tower can be lit up from sunset until late at night (until 23:00 from October to March). This light serves as a guiding symbol for the city of Muroran. Additionally, when the weather is clear, the visibility is exceptional, offering a dynamic view of the distant topography and sea.
Suryozan Observatory is accessible 24 hours a day. The most highly recommended time to visit is after sunset, when the city lights and the illuminated TV tower create a magical atmosphere. While beautiful year-round, a clear sunny day will provide the best panoramic views. Please note that the illumination schedule changes by season: during the winter months (October to March), the lighting ends at 23:00, so plan your visit accordingly.
Visitors can enjoy a peaceful experience observing nature and the landscape. From the summit, you can observe the layout of Muroran and the surrounding terrain from a 360-degree perspective. The area is also known as a spot where various birds gather, allowing you to enjoy the sounds of nature. Since the elevation change is not extreme, it is a relaxing spot to unwind while enjoying the view.
The area surrounding the observatory is characterized by the rich natural landscapes of Muroran. The view from the top provides a bird's-eye view of the entire city. There are well-maintained routes nearby for enjoying the scenery. Access can be made by walking from JR Muroran Station or by car. If driving, the route via the Muroran IC is the most convenient option.
While you can access the summit by foot or car, please dress appropriately for the season as it is an outdoor spot. If visiting at night, it is highly recommended to bring warm clothing to prepare for the temperature drop. There are no entrance fees or reservation requirements as the observatory is an open area. Please respect the environment by taking your trash home with you and following local etiquette.
