Sogenji is a temple of the Soto Zen sect located in Ota City, Gunmed Prefecture. Its most striking feature is the Kannon-do hall, known as "Sazae-do" (Conch Shell Hall). This building features a unique spiral internal structure that requires visitors to walk in a clockwise direction while performing their prayers. This distinctive design is a type of Sansodo (three-pathway hall) commonly found in the Kanto and Tohoku regions, which became popular during the Edo period alongside Kannon worship. The building is of exceptional value and is officially designated as an Important Cultural Property of Japan.
The origins of this temple are said to date back to when the founder established it to mourn the passing of Shoju-hime, who was brought from Kyoto by the Nitta clan. After the main hall was destroyed by fire during the Edo period, the current Kannon-do was constructed. This Kannon-do was built based on the devotion to the Thirty-three and One Hundred Kannon deities that flourished during the mid-Edo period. The temple grounds also contain various stone-carved cultural assets, such as Myogo Koto-ba and Gorinto, which serve as historical vestiges telling the story of the local region.

The absolute highlight is the "Sazae-do" with its spiral corridor. Because it is a one-way, clockwise path, visitors experience a unique ritual of walking while viewing the Kannon statue. This structure allows visitors to feel their perspective change naturally as they move through the space. Additionally, the grounds are dotted with historical stone monuments, allowing you to observe traditional Japanese architectural styles amidst a tranquil atmosphere.
The best time to visit is during the season when hydrangeas are in full bloom. The temple grounds are adorned with beautiful hydrangeas, offering a stunning display of colors. For the best experience, we recommend visiting during bright daylight hours to clearly observe the intricate details of the spiral structure and the architectural craftsmanship. If you wish to experience the profound silence of the temple, an early morning visit is highly recommended.
Here, you can experience the traditional Japanese architectural concept of "Sazae-do" firsthand. Walking through the spiral passage in a clockwise direction to circumambulate the Kannon statue is a rare and meditative experience not easily found elsewhere. This is more than just sightseeing; it is a precious opportunity to touch the essence of Japanese religious culture and ancient engineering techniques.
The area around Ota City features several other temples with historical charm and spots where you can enjoy seasonal flowers. After visiting Sogenji, we recommend exploring nearby historic streets or natural landscapes to make your journey through Gunma even more fulfilling.
As this is a sacred Buddhist temple, please observe proper etiquette. When walking through the interior of the building, please be mindful of your steps and maintain a quiet, respectful demeanor. We recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes and bringing a camera to capture the beautiful hydrangeas during the blooming season.
