The Sodeshi Rice Terraces (Sodeshi Tanada) are located in the Tango Town area of Kyotango City, Kyoto Prefecture. Situated on a coastal terrace, these fields were painstakingly carved out of the limited land between rugged mountains and the sea. The landscape features approximately 400 terraced plots that offer a breathtaking view of the blue Sea of Japan. This scenery, where the rice fields, the ocean, and the local settlements blend seamlessly, is a quintessential example of the harmonious relationship between human life and the natural environment in Japan.
This landscape is a testament to the wisdom of ancestors who lived in harmony with a challenging environment. To create these terraces on the coastal slopes, people had to adapt to the natural topography to secure their livelihoods. This area maintains a deep-rooted culture where agriculture and the sea are closely intertwined. The cultural significance of this location is further highlighted by its past use as a filming location for NHK television dramas, showcasing its authentic Japanese charm.
The most striking feature is the vivid contrast between the blue of the Sea of Japan and the colors of the rice fields. The scenery changes dramatically with the seasons: from the shimmering water surfaces during the planting season to the brilliant golden hues of ripening rice in the autumn. The sight of the sky reflecting in the flooded paddies or the golden stalks of grain under the sun is truly captivating. The expression of the terraces changes significantly depending on when you visit. From spring to early summer, the rice-planting season offers a mirror-like effect on the water surfaces, reflecting the sky beautifully. From summer to autumn, the landscape turns into a sea of golden grain. Visiting during sunset in the late summer or autumn is highly recommended, as the golden light hitting the rice stalks creates an incredibly emotional and poetic atmosphere. We suggest choosing a time that aligns with the agricultural cycle to see the most dramatic changes.
The primary activity here is the appreciation of the natural landscape. Visitors can enjoy walking along the surrounding paths to capture the changing scenery through photography. The area is ideal for a scenic drive or a quiet stroll to experience the harmony of Japanese rural life and the sea with all your senses. Please remember that these are active agricultural lands and should be treated with respect.
The area is part of the San'in Kaigan UNESCO Global Geopark, known for its unique geological features and beautiful coastlines. Kyotango City is blessed with abundant nature, and you can find many spots to experience the atmosphere of coastal fishing villages. A drive through this region, followed by a walk along the nearby coast, is a highly recommended itinerary.
There are very few shops in the immediate vicinity, so we strongly recommend carrying cash for transportation costs or beverages.
English language support is limited in the surrounding area. It is helpful to have a translation app or basic English knowledge.
No prior reservation is required to visit the viewing areas, but please respect the rules of the agricultural land.
Comfortable walking shoes are highly recommended for exploring the paths. Since you will be outdoors, bringing a hat and water is advisable to protect yourself from the sun.
Photography is free and encouraged, but please be mindful not to disturb any ongoing agricultural work.
Due to the uneven terrain and slopes around the rice terraces, some areas may be difficult to navigate with a wheelchair. We recommend viewing from the paved paths.
This is active farmland. Please strictly avoid stepping into the rice paddies. Additionally, parking on the roadside is prohibited; please use designated parking areas or safe spots to avoid obstructing traffic.
