Shosei-en is a garden designated as a National Place of Scenic Beauty, serving as an integral part of the Higashi Hongan-ji temple complex. Known for its refined aesthetic, it was officially designated as a National Place of Scenic Beauty in 1936. The garden features a diverse landscape known as the 'Thirteen Scenic Views.' Visitors are captivated by the ever-changing scenery, where seasonal flowers bloom in harmony with the architecture, offering a different-looking landscape depending on when you visit.
The garden has a long history closely intertwined with the history of Higashi Hongan-ji. Designed with a high level of literary and artistic sophistication, it maintains a beautiful landscape that exists in perfect harmony with nature. Its status as a National Place of Scenic Beauty highlights its immense architectural and historical value. As part of the Higashi Hongan-ji temple grounds, it has preserved the traditional beauty of Japanese gardens while remaining deeply connected to Buddhist culture for many years.
The garden is dotted with several historic structures that blend seamlessly with the natural landscape. Key buildings include Rinchi-tei (guest house), Tekisuiken (guest house), Hokasho-kaku, and Enrin-do. The integration of these structures with the garden is a vital element of Japanese architecture and nature fusion. Furthermore, the garden is designed so that the 'Thirteen Scenic Views' offer a unique perspective and different scenery from various vantage points throughout the grounds.
Shosei-en offers a completely different atmosphere depending on the season. In spring, you can enjoy cherry blossoms and fresh greenery; in summer, the lush, vibrant greenery provides a refreshing sight; in autumn, the vibrant colors of the maple leaves are breathtaking; and in winter, the garden offers a serene, quiet beauty, sometimes covered in snow. Visiting during these seasonal transitions allows for a deeper appreciation of the garden's natural cycles.

From March to October: 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM (Last admission at 4:30 PM).
From November to February: 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM (Last admission at 3:30 PM).
Please check the time in advance as closing times vary by season.
While the standard way to enjoy the garden is through a quiet stroll, special events such as guided tours led by monks are occasionally held. Additionally, some of the buildings that are usually closed to the public are used for special events like luncheon parties, exhibitions, or wedding photography sessions. Please contact the facility directly for inquiries regarding the use of these spaces.
Shosei-en is located near the historic center of Kyoto, adjacent to Higashi Hongan-ji. It is easily accessible from Kyoto Station, making it a convenient stop. The surrounding area is rich with other historical temples and cultural sites, allowing you to easily combine a visit to the garden with a walking tour of the local neighborhood.
Since the garden contains unpaved paths and some uneven terrain, we recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes. Please choose clothing appropriate for the current season.
