Shomyoji Temple is a temple of the Shingon Ryishu sect located in Kanazawa Ward, Yokohama, Kanagawa Prefecture. Its origins date back to a private prayer hall built by Hojo Tokimichi, a key figure in the Kamakura Shogunate, within his residence in Kanazawa. As the family temple of the Kanazawa Hojo clan, it holds significant historical importance and is designated as a national historical site. The temple grounds feature a breathtaking 'Pure Land Garden' centered around Aji Pond, offering a landscape that deeply evokes the atmosphere of medieval Japan.
The origins of this temple date back to the mid-13th century. Founded by Hojo Tokimichi, the temple reached its peak during the era of his grandson, Saiken, when it became a grand temple complex with a seven-hall structure, including a three-story pagoda. The central deity, the Miroku Bosatsu (Maitreya Buddha) statue, is a designated National Important Cultural Property, believed to have been commissioned by Hojo Tokimichi. Additionally, the bell tower, famous as one of the 'Kanazawa Hakkei' (Eight Views of Kanazawa) depicted by Utagawa Hiroshige as 'The Evening Bell of Shomyo,' serves as a testament to the location's storied history.
Passing through the vermilion-painted Red Gate (Akamon), you will walk along a path lined with cherry trees toward the Nio-mon Gate, where two large Nio guardian statues stand 4 meters tall. Beyond this lies the Pure Land Garden, featuring Aji Pond, Nakano Island, and the reflection of the bridges (Hani-hashi and Hirabashi). This garden is a reconstruction of the classic Pure Land style from the late Heian period. Visitors can also marvel at the 800-year-old ginkgo tree, ancient stone Buddhas, and various National Important Cultural Properties.
The temple offers stunning scenery throughout the seasons. In spring, cherry blossoms line the paths; in early summer, yellow irises bloom. Autumn brings vibrant foliage that harmonizes beautifully with the historic structures. In early May, the temple sometimes hosts 'Takigi Noh' (firewood Noh theater) performances. During special illumination events, the scene becomes truly mystical, with the lights reflecting off Aji Pond to illuminate the bridges, the main hall, and the Nio statues, creating a profound sense of medieval charm.
Every Saturday and Sunday, between 10:00 AM and 12:30 PM, the Yokohama Kanazawa City Guide Association offers free garden tours (subject to cancellation in case of rain). Visitors can enjoy a peaceful stroll around Aji Pond while observing the historical architecture and natural beauty. The serene environment is perfect for meditation and quiet reflection.
The area surrounding Shomyoji is rich in cultural heritage. The 'Shomyoji Citizen's Forest' encompasses a vast area around Kinzan-yama. Nearby, the Kanagawa Prefectural Kanazawa Bunko serves as a museum and library, allowing visitors to continue their exploration of local history and literature.
We recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes, as the temple grounds include slopes and stairs. Since this is a sacred Buddhist site, please be prepared to use cash for offerings or specific events.
