Shokoji Temple is a temple of the Jodo Shinshu Honganji sect, located in Fushiki Kokufu, Takaoka City, Toyama Prefecture. The temple grounds are home to several significant cultural assets, most notably the National Treasure-designated Main Hall (Hondo) and the Grand Chamber (Daihiro) with its entrance porch (Shikidai). The site preserves the majestic architectural landscape of the Edo period, characterized by the overwhelming scale and presence of its massive wooden structures. Following recent large-scale restoration projects, the historical integrity of these buildings has been meticulously maintained for future generations.
The origins of Shokoji Temple date back to 1471, founded as Tsuchiyama Gobo by Rennyo. Throughout its history, the temple has endured fires and relocations before settling in its current location in Takaoka. During the Edo period, the temple grounds were developed under the patronage of the Maeda clan of the Kaga Domain. The site holds deep local significance, as the 10th lord of the Maeda clan once underwent religious training here. In 2022, the Main Hall and the Grand Chamber/Shikidai were officially designated as National Treasures. Furthermore, the temple was recognized as a component of the 'Japan Heritage' in 2015.
The most significant attractions are the National Treasure-designated Main Hall and the Grand Chamber. The Main Hall is a colossal wooden structure reflecting the architectural style of the late Edo period; its immense height and width create a sense of profound gravity that leaves a lasting impression on visitors. The Grand Chamber, with its expansive tatami-matted interior, allows visitors to experience the texture of the wood and the stillness of the air within a historic setting. Other notable features include the Karamon (Chinese-style gate) and the Somon (Great Gate), which contribute to the striking historical landscape of the temple grounds.
Shokoji Temple reveals different charms depending on the season. From March to November, the temple is open from 9:00 AM to 4:30 PM (last entry at 4:00 PM). From December to February, the hours are 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM (last entry at 3:30 PM). Please note that during the New Year period (December 29 to January 4), only the Main Hall and the temple grounds are accessible; the Grand Chamber and other inner buildings are closed to the public. Visiting during daylight hours is highly recommended to fully appreciate the intricate details of the wooden architecture and the vastness of the grounds.
Visitors can enjoy a contemplative walk through the historic temple grounds. To deepen your understanding, an audio guide is available for rent (500 JPY), providing detailed explanations of the site's history. Additionally, the temple offers programs for Shakyo (sutra copying), allowing guests to touch upon traditional Japanese spiritual practices in a serene, authentic environment.
Shokoji Temple is part of the 'Fushiki/Toyama Bay Sightseeing' route in Toyama Prefecture. It is easily integrated into a travel plan that includes the Himi area, Amaharashi Coast, and the Michi-no-Eki Amaharashi. While it is a short distance from the main Takaoka Station area, it is highly accessible by car, making it an excellent destination for a scenic driving tour.
When visiting, we recommend wearing modest and respectful clothing suitable for a temple. Pets are strictly prohibited on the premises. If you wish to use the audio guide, a fee of 500 JPY is required. For groups wishing to request a volunteer guide, please contact the temple at least 3 days in advance. As this is a sacred place of worship, please maintain a quiet and respectful demeanor to preserve the peaceful atmosphere.
