Shofukuyama Park is located in the Aki-tsu area of Higashihiroshima City, Hiroshima Prefecture. Situated on a high vantage point, the park offers an expansive, open landscape where, on clear days, you can even see as far as Shikoku island. It is renowned as a premier cherry blossom destination, with approximately 1,000 Yoshino cherry trees blooming in full splendor every spring, drawing many visitors. A standout feature is the observation deck that extends toward the sea, allowing you to look down upon the unique local scenery, including the floating oyster rafts (kaki-ikada) that dot the waters.
The park serves as a beloved community space that celebrates the natural beauty and local landscape of the region. During the cherry blossom season, the area is decorated with traditional lanterns to celebrate the season and local heritage. The view is also culturally significant, as it captures the lights of the local industry: the lights from the shipyards in Mitsu Bay and the distinctive lights of Mount Hono, creating a landscape that blends nature with the daily life and industrial history of the Seto Inland Sea.
The park features two distinct observation decks. The one that juts out toward the sea provides an immersive experience, making you feel as though you are floating above the calm waters of the Seto Inland Sea and the countless oyster rafts below. During the spring season, the night-time illumination creates a magical atmosphere, where the pink cherry blossoms are lit by lanterns, harmonizing with the distant lights of shipyard cranes and Mount Hono. The park is designed for various activities, featuring benches and tables for relaxing, as well as a playground area with swings and slides for children.
The most vibrant time to visit is during the spring (March to April) when the cherry blossoms are in full bloom. The night-time illumination is a must-see experience, offering a different perspective of the blossoms and the surrounding lights. For the best views of the islands and the distant Shikoku coastline, aim for a clear, sunny day. Regardless of the season, the park offers a peaceful view of the calm Seto Inland Sea.
Visitors can enjoy a relaxing picnic or a family outing using the many benches and open spaces provided. The playground area is a popular spot for families with children. During the peak cherry blossom season, you may encounter food trucks or local vendors selling light snacks and drinks, providing a wonderful opportunity to experience the local flavors of the region while enjoying the natural scenery.
The Shofukuji Temple is located very close to the park. Additionally, the park is easily accessible via a 15-minute walk from JR Akitsu Station, making it a convenient starting point for those traveling by public transportation. The surrounding area is deeply immersed in the rich natural beauty of the Seto Inland Sea.
