Shishigahana Wetland is a precious natural site located in Kaho City, Akita Prefecture, nurtured by the abundant waters of Mt. Chokai. At an altitude of approximately 550m, massive amounts of spring water emerge from the terminal cliffs of ancient lava flows, creating this unique wetland ecosystem. The well-maintained boardwalk offers a roughly 5km walking course through groves of massive beech and oak trees, allowing visitors to feel the raw vitality of nature up close.

Historical and Cultural Background

The landscape of this area is a blend of natural processes and human history. From the late Edo period through the Showa era, charcoal making was a common practice in this region. It is said that the historical harvesting of trees influenced the unique growth patterns of the current beech trees. Geologically, the environment was shaped by the accumulation of debris from a past collapse of Mt. Chakai, which was then covered by subsequent lava flows, resulting in the rich spring water system seen today.

• *Agariko Daio**: A legendary giant beech tree with a circumference of 7.62m and an estimated age of 300 years. Its unique shape is said to be a result of the historical charcoal-making era, making it a symbol of the forest.
• *Chokai Marimo**: These are mosses that grow in ball-like clusters, some exceeding 1 meter in diameter. While they may look like they are attached to rocks, they are actually free-growing spherical mosses.
• *Dutsubo**: The most abundant spring pool within the wetland. With a low water temperature (7.2–7.3°C) and acidic water (pH 4.5–4.6), it maintains a highly specialized and stable environment.
