Shiriya-zaki is a cape located in Higashidori Village, Shimokita District, Aomori Prefecture, marking the northeasternmost tip of Honshu Island. Historically, due to its treacherous waters, it was once known as the "Graveyard of the Sea." Today, it offers a breathtaking landscape defined by its rugged coastline and the iconic white Shiriya-zaki Lighthouse. A unique highlight of this location is the sight of the "Kandachime" horses—a local breed of hardy horses—grazing peacefully in the surrounding meadows alongside the historic lighthouse.
The area around Shiriya-zaki has a long-standing tradition of unique pastoral culture known as "Shiki-okitsuke." Based on traditional horse-rearing methods that have persisted since the Nanbu clan's administration, the Kandachime horses have been bred to withstand the harsh, cold climate and limited food supplies of this region. Today, through conservation efforts, these horses are seen grazing in the pastures. Additionally, the Shiriya-zaki Lighthouse, a landmark with over 120 years of history, serves as a testament to the area's maritime heritage.
The centerpiece of the cape is the Shiriya-zaki Lighthouse. The lighthouse features 128 steps leading to the top, where visitors can enjoy a stunning 360-degree view of the vast Tsugaru Strait and the Pacific Ocean. Below the lighthouse, you can observe the Kandachime horses wandering through the meadows. From April to June, visitors may even have the chance to see foals during the birth season. The scenery changes beautifully depending on the time of day and season, offering different expressions of the sea, sky, and the movement of the horses.
While beautiful year-round, the autumn months of October and November are particularly recommended, as the air is exceptionally clear, making the landscape transitions vivid and striking. The period from April to June is also special for observing the natural lifecycle of the Kandachime horses. Please note that during the winter season (December to March), certain facilities, including access to the interior of the lighthouse, may be closed. For the best experience, visit during daylight hours to enjoy the panoramic views and wildlife observation.
The primary activities here involve observing the harmony between nature and historical architecture. Climbing the lighthouse stairs offers a thrilling panoramic view from a high vantage point. The horses reside in pastures separated by gates, allowing visitors to observe their natural behavior from a respectful distance without disturbing them.
Nearby, you can visit the "Sarugamori Hibamori Forest" for nature observation or the "Gyuugawa Rest House" for a break. These spots are excellent to visit alongside your trip to Shiriya-zaki. The area is also part of the Shimokita Geopark, making it an ideal location for observing unique geological formations and natural environments.
The cape is known for very strong winds, and temperatures can drop significantly depending on the season. We highly recommend bringing windproof clothing and wearing comfortable walking shoes. If you wish to tour the lighthouse, please note that an admission fee is required (cash only). When observing the horses, please maintain a respectful distance and do not approach the gates. When taking photos, please respect the natural environment and the animals' habitat.
