Shiroyone Senmaida is a breathtaking collection of terraced rice fields located in Shirome, Wajima City, Ishikawa Prefecture, facing the Sea of Japan. Approximately 1,004 small rice paddies are arranged in layers along the coastline, creating a striking geometric pattern that seems to flow into the sea. This site is a significant cultural landscape of the Oku-Noto region, designated as a "Connecting Terraced Rice Field Heritage" by the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries and a National Place of Scenic Beauty. In 2011, it was also recognized as a Globally Important Agricultural Heritage System. The scale of the individual paddies is remarkably small, with some measuring only about 50 centimeters square, showcasing a unique beauty shaped by the natural terrain.
The history of Shiroyone Senmaida dates back to the early Edo period of the Kaga Domain. Water systems like the Taniyama Irrigation System, established around 1632, have supported the agriculture of this land for centuries. The area is deeply connected to the lives of the local people, once celebrated in poetry describing the meticulous labor of maintaining the paddies. While salt production was once common along this coastline, current efforts focus on preserving this precious landscape. Organizations such as the local "Shiroyone Senmaida Aikokai" and the Scenic Preservation Council work tirelessly to maintain traditional farming methods and protect the cultural landscape.
The greatest charm of Shiroyone Senmaida is the dramatic change in color throughout the seasons. In spring, the water-filled paddies act as mirrors reflecting the sky. In summer, the vibrant green of the rice plants contrasts beautifully with the blue of the sea. In autumn, the golden hues of the ripening rice sway in the breeze. A special highlight is the "Aze no Kirameki" event held in winter. During this time, approximately 25,000 solar-powered LED lights are installed along the ridges of the paddies, transforming the night landscape into a mystical, glowing space with changing colors.
While the landscape is beautiful year-round, the appearance of the paddies changes significantly by season. Spring (around May) features water-filled paddies, summer (June to August) showcases the most vivid greenery, and autumn (September to October) offers golden landscapes before harvest. The area features an "Owner System" for those wishing to contribute to the landscape's preservation. This system allows individuals to effectively 'own' a rice paddy throughout the year, participating in the tradition of maintaining the scenery. Here, you can enjoy time surrounded by the rich nature and the beautiful scenery of the terraced fields.
Convenient rest facilities and roadside stations (Michi-no-Eki) are located near Shiroyone Senmaida. The surrounding area includes various sightseeing spots within Wajima City and the beautiful coastline of the Noto Peninsula. As this is an outdoor scenic site, please dress according to the weather. Temperatures can drop significantly during spring, autumn, and especially during winter night events, so bringing warm clothing is advisable.
