Located in Shananai Town, Hokkaido, the Shirotaishi Farm Observatory sits at an altitude of 550 meters. It is part of the historic Shirotaishi Farm, which has a rich history dating back to 1920 and covers a vast area of approximately 160 hectares. From this vantage point, visitors can enjoy a breathtaking panorama that includes the majestic silhouette of Mount Komagatake, the iconic shape of Mount Hakodate, and the expansive Ono Plain. At night, the location becomes a premier spot for viewing the spectacular night lights, often referred to as the 'Seven-Star Night View' due to its exceptional clarity.
Shirotaishi Farm is a municipal farm deeply rooted in the local community, with a history spanning over a century since 1920. These vast green pastures have long served as a cornerstone of Hokkaido's livestock culture. Even today, the farm hosts approximately 180 cattle, and depending on the season, you can see cows peacefully grazing in the lush pastures, accompanied by the gentle sound of cowbells echoing through the fresh air. It is more than just a scenic viewpoint; it is a place where you can truly feel the essence of Hokkaido's dairy farming heritage.
The greatest attraction is undoubtedly the panoramic view. On clear days, the elegant ridges of Mount Komagatake and the distant silhouette of Mount Hakodate appear vividly against the sky. At night, the lights of the Hakodate area spread out like scattered jewels, offering a completely different atmosphere from the daytime. From early summer to autumn, the sight of lush green pastures and grazing cattle creates a quintessential Hokkaido landscape that is deeply peaceful.
The observatory is primarily accessible from May to October. The scenery changes dramatically with the seasons. From early summer to autumn, the verdant pastures provide a soothing backdrop for watching the cattle. While the daytime offers bright, natural panoramas, the nighttime provides a magical experience with the city lights below. Please note that the observatory itself is closed from late October to April, and the access road (Shirotaishi Skyline) is closed from mid-November to late April, so please plan your visit accordingly.
This is an ideal destination for a scenic drive. The journey up the Shirotaishi Skyline to reach the high-altitude viewpoint offers a dynamic and changing landscape. Within the farm area, you can observe the daily life of cattle amidst the vast greenery, allowing you to touch upon the everyday scenery of Hokkaido where nature and livestock coexist.
The area is surrounded by famous spots such as Onuma Quasi-National Park and the scenic shores of Lake Onuma. It serves as an excellent base for those wishing to enjoy boat tours or other nature-based activities in the Onuma area. Additionally, it is easily accessible from Hakodate city, making it a perfect addition to a driving itinerary while sightseeing in the Hakodate region.
As the observatory is located at 550m, the temperature tends to be lower than in the lowlands. Please bring appropriate clothing for the altitude. The Shirotaishi Skyline is a mountain road with several steep gradients; please drive with caution. Also, be sure to check road regulations in advance.
