Shirasaki Coast, located in Yura Town, Hidaka District, Wakayama Prefecture, is a stunning coastline where white limestone meets the azure sea. The striking contrast between the white rocks and the blue ocean creates a sensation of being in a foreign land, making it one of Wakayama's most iconic scenic spots. As a designated natural park, it offers a rich ecosystem and breathtaking coastal views.
The geological features of this coast date back millions of years. The limestone that forms the current landscape is believed to have originated during the Permian period, over 250 million years ago. Numerous fossils of ancient marine life, such as crinoids, have been discovered here, telling the story of an ancient ocean. Additionally, the area is home to historic shrines, representing a place where nature and local culture have co-existed for generations.
Shirasaki Coast is dotted with spots that showcase the wonders of nature. A major highlight is the massive white limestone cape protruding into the sea. Another must-see is the 'Totsui Limestone Cave.' Although approximately 100 meters long, it offers a mysterious subterranean experience where you can observe stunning stalactites up close, including the precious 'Heavenly Curtain' formation. Furthermore, the 'Tategoiwa' rock is a popular photogenic spot, where you can frame the ocean view through a natural hole in the center of the rock.
The coast shows different faces throughout the seasons. From winter to spring, over 100,000 narcissus flowers bloom along the coast, adding vibrant white and yellow colors to the blue sea. From March to July, you can also observe the lively presence of black-footed birds like Black-footed Albatrosses or cormorants. For the best photography, visit during bright daylight hours when the color of the sea is most vivid.
