Overview & Charm

Shirono-e Botanical Garden is a nature-rich botanical park located on the eastern side of Moji-ku, Kitakyushu, which marks the easternmost tip of Kyushu. Situated on a gentle hill overlooking the Suo-nada Sea (Seto Inland Sea), the park spans approximately 8 hectares of vast territory. The landscape features beautiful paths with natural elevation changes, creating a dynamic walking experience. Based on a Japanese-style natural garden, this park is a true "healing space" where visitors can enjoy diverse flora, fauna, and stunning scenery throughout the seasons.

History & Cultural Background

The history of this park dates back to around 1950, when it began as a private botanical garden called "Shiki no Oka" (Hill of Four Seasons). After many years as a private institution, it was reborn on April 7, 1996, as the "Kitakyushu Municipal Shirono-e Botanical Garden," a public park beloved by the local community. Having passed through over 30 years of history, it continues to be cherished as a vital site for nature education and community relaxation.

Main Highlights

The garden showcases a wide variety of plants that change their expression with every season. You can discover something new every time you visit: cherry blossoms and tulips in spring, vibrant greenery in early summer, colorful autumn foliage, and the serene, quiet landscapes of winter. The walking paths, designed to utilize the natural terrain, offer a unique perspective as the elevation changes, allowing you to enjoy the plants alongside the breathtaking view of the Suo-nada Sea. Additionally, certain precious plant species are exhibited during specific seasons.

Recommended Seasons & Times

The best time to visit depends on what you wish to experience. Spring (March to May) is the most brilliant season when flowers are in full bloom. In summer, you can enjoy the deep, lush greenery and the vitality of life. Autumn (September to November) offers a spectacular display of autumn colors. For the best experience, we recommend visiting in the early morning when the air is crisp and the plants look most fresh. Toward the evening, the changing light creates a dramatic and beautiful atmosphere.
