Shiroishi Castle is a flatland-mountain castle located within Masuoka Park in the center of Shiroishi City, Miyagi Prefecture. It holds a significant history as the ancestral home of the Katakura clan, who served as the high-ranking retainers of the Date family and managed this strategic southern point of the Sendai Domain. The greatest highlight is the "Three-Story Tower (Tenshu)", which was faithfully reconstructed in 1995. Despite modern building regulations, this grand wooden structure was granted special certification, making it one of the largest wooden reconstructions in Japan. Visitors can enjoy history from multiple perspectives, including the striking exterior, the detailed interior exhibits, and the cutting-edge 3D theater.
Since 1602, Shiroishi Castle has been protected by the Katakura clan as a branch castle of Sendai Castle. It is a historically significant site that was uniquely permitted to remain even during the "One Castle per Province" decree issued by the Edo Shogunate. Although the structure was once dismantled during the Meiji era, the three-story tower and the main gates (Ote Ichino-mon and Ote Nino-mon) were reconstructed in wood during the Heisei era to honor the legacy of Katakura Kojuro Kagemune. The site also played a crucial role during the Boshin War of the Meiji Restoration, serving as a location where the alliance of the Ouetsu Reppan Domei was established.
The Shiroishi Castle History Museum consists of three floors. The 1st floor features a shop selling local Shiroishi products and original Shiroishi Castle merchandise, alongside a restaurant where you can enjoy meals. The 2nd floor houses the Historical Museum, featuring a 1/100 scale model of the castle, panels explaining the reconstruction process, and an array of artifacts such as armor, swords, and matchlock guns related to the Katakura clan. This allows visitors to gain a deep understanding of the lifestyle and warfare of the era. On the 3rd floor, you can experience a powerful historical epic through the "High-Definition 3D Theater," equipped with a 200-inch high-brightness screen.
The scenery of Shiroishi Castle (Masuoka Park) changes beautifully with the seasons. In spring, the surrounding park is enveloped in lush greenery, providing a beautiful contrast with the historical architecture. Since the museum exhibits and 3D theater are indoor attractions, they are perfect for sightseeing even during rainy weather or hot summer days. A stroll through the grounds in the late afternoon while imagining the historical scenes is also highly recommended. Please note that the last entry is 30 minutes before the closing time, so please plan your visit accordingly.
