Shiretoko Pass Lookout is a stunning observation point located at an altitude of 738 meters within Shiretoko National Park, Hokkaido. It sits at the highest point of National Route 334, commonly known as the "Shiretoko Transversal Road," which connects Utoro in Shari Town to Rausu Town. From this vantage point, you can gaze directly at the magnificent Mount Rausu, the centerpiece of the Shiretoko Mountain Range. The view offers a quintessential Hokkaido landscape, where a vast forest meets the sea under a wide-open sky.
This area is a vital part of the Shiretoko National Park, a designated UNESCO World Natural Heritage site, renowned for its untouched and pristine wilderness. Shiretoko Pass has historically served as a crucial route for traversing the Shiretoko Peninsula. It is a place that symbolizes both the harshness and the sublime beauty of nature. The surrounding ecosystem is exceptionally rich and is strictly protected as a national park to preserve its unique biodiversity.
The greatest attraction is the overwhelming presence of Mount Rausu standing directly before you. The sharp, majestic silhouette of Mount Rausu changes its expression with the seasons and weather, leaving visitors in awe. From the lookout, you can enjoy the sweeping views of the Shiretoko Mountain Range and the deep green forest stretching far below. On clear days, the view is so expansive that you can feel the dynamic boundary between the distant sea and the sky.
Please note that Shiretoko Pass is closed during the winter season. It is highly recommended to visit between May and October. The scenery changes dramatically with the seasons: you can enjoy the vibrant fresh greenery in spring/early summer or the breathtaking autumn foliage. Visiting during daylight hours is ideal, as the sunlight allows you to see the intricate details of Mount Rausu and enjoy a crystal-clear panoramic view.
Most visitors experience the lookout as a stop during a scenic drive. The primary purpose is to pause and soak in the grand scale of the landscape. The lookout can be easily integrated into a larger travel itinerary that includes spots like the Shiretoko Five Lakes or the Shiretoko Nature Center to deepen your understanding of the region. Additionally, the nearby Rausu Onsen area offers hot springs for relaxation after exploring the natural wonders.
There are many spots nearby to fully enjoy the Shiretoko experience. For instance, at the Shiretoko Five Lakes, you can walk through primeval forests while admiring the serene lakes. If you continue toward Rausu Town, you will find relaxing hot spring spots like Rausu Onsen and the Rausu Intermittent Spring. Facilities like the Shiretoko Nature Center also provide excellent opportunities to learn about the local ecology and environment.
Because the pass is at a high altitude, temperatures tend to be much lower than in the coastal areas. It can also be quite windy, so we strongly recommend bringing a warm jacket or extra layers. While the parking area is free and there are no entrance fees, please be mindful of the environment by taking all your trash back with you. While the facility itself is free, having cash or a transportation IC card is useful for any incidental expenses in the surrounding areas.
