Shirataki Park is a beautiful natural park located in the Shirataki area of Ozu City, Ehime Prefecture. Spanning an area of 53,182 square meters, the park is characterized by its seven distinct waterfalls. It is a place of great poetic significance, famously described by the poet Ujo Noguchi, who wrote: 'In autumn at Shirataki, the maple trees and the mountains are draped in a brocade curtain.' This literary connection highlights the profound natural beauty and the seamless blend of landscape and art found here.
The area has long been celebrated for its natural splendor. The cultural depth of the park is enriched by its connection to literature, specifically through the works of Ujo Noguchi, such as the 'Shirataki Kouta' (Shirataki Song). This connection between nature and poetry gives the park a unique cultural identity, making the waterfall scenery a cherished local natural heritage.
The park features a total of seven waterfalls scattered throughout the terrain. A major highlight is the dramatic drop of the waterfalls, such as the 'Meotaki' (Couple Falls), and the way the surrounding topography creates a stunning visual landscape. During the autumn season, the contrast between the white flowing water of the falls and the brilliant colors of the changing maple leaves creates an unforgettable spectacle.
The most highly recommended time to visit is from mid-November to late November, when the autumn foliage reaches its peak. During this period, the entire mountain appears to be painted in vibrant colors. Visiting during the bright daylight hours allows you to fully appreciate the clarity of the rushing water and the vividness of the leaves. The park is open throughout the year from morning until 17:00.
The primary activity at Shirataki Park is hiking along the well-maintained walking paths. To make your journey comfortable, several benches and rest houses (azumaya) are strategically placed along the trails. Because the terrain involves some elevation changes, these resting spots are perfect for taking a break and observing the waterfalls at a slower pace.
Ozu City is often referred to as the 'Little Kyoto of Iyo' due to its beautifully preserved historical streetscapes. The surrounding area is rich with history, featuring landmarks like Ozu Castle and the scenic landscapes along the Hime River.
