The Anmon Valley route, located at the foot of the Shirakami-Sanchi UNESCO World Heritage site, is a hiking course where you can directly experience the raw power of nature. The landscape is defined by rugged, steep rock walls that frame a beautiful river and a series of spectacular waterfalls, creating a sense of awe in every visitor. The most iconic highlight is the sequence of three large waterfalls that appear one after another, showcasing the sheer force of the water. The contrast between the vibrant green of the surrounding beech forests and the white, rushing water against the dark rock faces offers a beauty that allows you to completely forget the stresses of daily life.
The Anmon River is a tributary of the Iwaki River, often regarded as a vital water source for the Tsugaru region. For generations, the waterfalls of Anmon have been cherished as scenic landmarks by local communities, drawing explorers and nature lovers to witness their beauty. Because this area is an incredibly rich and sensitive ecosystem, strict management is in place to preserve the natural environment while sharing its magnificent charm with the world.

The greatest highlight of this route is the journey through the three waterfalls. The trek begins with the 'Third Waterfall,' followed by the 'Second Waterfall,' and culminates at the highest point, the 'First Waterfall.' Each waterfall offers a different sensation of power and scale, ensuring that every step of your journey brings a new discovery. The area around the Second Waterfall is particularly beautiful, with well-maintained paths that provide excellent vantage points for photography. Throughout the walk, you will also enjoy the lush, diverse vegetation of the ancient beech forest.
The expression of the valley changes dramatically with the seasons. From May to June, the fresh greenery of the beech trees is at its peak, making the water look exceptionally clear and refreshing for a spring hike. During the height of summer (July and August), the soothing sound of the mountain stream provides a natural cooling effect against the heat. In autumn, the forest transforms into a vibrant tapestry of colors as the leaves change. For the best experience, we recommend visiting in the early morning when the sunlight filters through the canopy, creating a luminous and vivid landscape.

The primary activity is hiking along established paths. The experience is not just about reaching a destination, but the process of walking through the valley while listening to the rhythmic murmur of the river. While the paths are relatively well-maintained, the terrain is shaped by nature, allowing you to feel the changes in elevation and the proximity of the flowing water. Standing close to the waterfalls allows you to feel the physical energy of the descending water with your entire body.
The Shirakami-Sanchi Visitor Center serves as the primary hub for this area. The center provides valuable information regarding the natural history of Shirakami-Sanchi and supports various nature-related activities. We highly recommend stopping by the visitor center before your hike to deepen your understanding of the local ecosystem and the unique flora and fauna of the region.

To protect this precious environment, please follow all rules regarding the prohibition of collecting plants and the requirement to carry out all trash. Because the terrain can be damp or uneven, appropriate footwear is essential; we strongly recommend non-slip hiking or trekking shoes. Please ensure you have sufficient cash for local needs and strictly adhere to local environmental rules to help preserve this pristine wilderness.
