Shiori Pass is a mountain pass located at an altitude of 1,065 meters in Uonuma City, Niigata Prefecture. It is renowned for a rare and breathtaking phenomenon known as 'Takigumo' (Waterfall Clouds), which occurs from late summer through October. During this time, a sea of clouds gathers in the valleys and flows over the mountain ridges like a cascading waterfall. This spectacular sight, which typically occurs at sunrise, is considered a highly mystical and rare natural event. To ensure a great viewing experience, observation points have been developed around the parking area.
The region holds significant history; it was once a vital route when the Takada Clan began silver mining in the area, with the nearby Sakamoto serving as a flourishing post town. Following the start of silver mining in 1675, Shiori Pass became a crucial path. Although the pass declined in use after the silver mines closed, it later served as a transport route for forest resources and during the construction of the Okuadamm Dam during the Meiji era. Today, it stands as a place where visitors can enjoy the profound connection between historical landscapes and natural phenomena.
The absolute highlight is the 'Takigumo' phenomenon that unfolds at sunrise. Watching the sea of clouds spill over the peaks like a waterfall is a once-in-a-lifetime experience unique to this location. The viewing points near the parking area provide a stable and safe way to observe this beauty. Additionally, the 'Old Shiori Pass (Silver Road)' was designated as a cultural asset in 2003 and is well-maintained as a scenic hiking trail.
The Takigumo phenomenon is most frequent from late summer through October. The best time to witness it is precisely at sunrise. The peak observation period is between July and October. Please note that during the winter season (approximately December to May), the roads are subject to complete closures due to heavy snow, so extreme caution and prior checking of road conditions are necessary.
Beyond observing natural scenery, the area hosts an annual hill climb race in the summer. This race starts from the Oyu Onsen area at the foot of the mountain and finishes at Shiori Pass, covering a total distance of 14km with an elevation gain of 750m. In the past, shuttle bus services have also been operated to facilitate the observation of the Takigumo, highlighting the area's popularity for nature-based tourism.
The area around the pass features various trailheads for climbing mountains such as Mt. Echigo Komagatake. At the foot of the mountain, you can find relaxing hot spring facilities like Oyu Onsen. The 'Okuadmi Silver Line' runs parallel to the area; please note that while it is a smooth road, motorcycles and pedestrians are prohibited on this specific route, though it serves as a major access path for the region.
