Mount Shioudeyama is a 352.1-meter mountain located on the Shonai Peninsula in western Kagawa Prefecture. It is part of the Seto Inland Sea National Park, and the summit area is meticulously maintained as a public park. This location is renowned as a premier observation spot for viewing the 'beautiful many islands' (tashima-bi) of the Seto Inland Sea and has been featured in various domestic and international media outlets. The landscape changes beautifully throughout the seasons, with cherry blossoms reaching full bloom in spring and hydrangeas becoming a highlight in early summer, allowing visitors to observe the shifting colors of nature.
The name 'Shioudeyama' is deeply connected to local folklore. The region is associated with the legend of Urashima Taro, a famous figure in Japanese mythology. It is said that the name originated from a legend where the smoke from the mysterious treasure box (Tamatebako) opened by Urashima Taro turned into purple clouds that draped over the mountain. Statues related to this legend can be found in the vicinity. Geologically, the area features a residual hill topography and possesses a geological structure related to volcanic activity from the Miocene epoch.
The summit area is developed as a park, offering an expansive view of the islands in the Seto Inland Sea from the observation deck. The scenery is characterized by its seasonal transformations: the vibrant cherry blossoms of spring, the lush hydrangeas of early summer, the colorful autumn foliage in late autumn, and the clear, crisp vistas of winter. Additionally, the summit features outcrops of andesitic volcanic rock that showcase the area's unique geological characteristics. A second-order triangulation station is also installed at the peak.
The changing scenery is the most significant feature of this mountain. From March to April, the cherry blossom season attracts many visitors. From June to July, the hydrangeas are in full bloom. In late autumn, the changing colors of the leaves provide a different beauty, while in winter, the clear air allows for much longer visibility of distant landscapes. To experience the Seto Inland Sea scenery at its absolute best, it is highly recommended to visit on days with stable weather and during times when the air is particularly clear.
There is a paved road leading to the summit, allowing visitors to drive directly to the top for easy access. However, there are also established hiking routes for those who wish to enjoy a trek. There are two main routes: one climbing from the Ohama district to the south, and another from Hakotosse to the north. Both routes are well-maintained, and since it is a relatively low mountain (around 300m altitude), the hike is manageable in a short amount of time. The northern trailhead at Hakotosse also connects to a hiking path that leads toward the Cape Misaki.
Mount Shioudeyama is situated in the middle of the Shonai Peninsula in Mitoyo City, Kagawa Prefecture. The Shonai Peninsula extends into the Seto Inland Sea in a slender shape and is surrounded by rich, untouched nature.
