The Shiotawara Cliffs (Misaki Columnar Jointing) is a breathtaking scenic site located on the west coast of Ikitsuki Island in Hirado City, Nagasaki Prefecture. It resembles a massive sculpture crafted by nature itself. The cliffs, stretching approximately 500m north to south with a height of about 20m, are characterized by a unique topography of regular rock pillars known as "columnar jointing," formed by volcanic activity. The rock surface, featuring a striking honeycomb-like structure, symbolizes the sublime beauty of natural formation and has been selected as one of Nagasaki's New Top 100 Tourist Sites. The stepped rock formations, sculpted by the powerful waves of the Genkai Sea, offer visitors an overwhelming and awe-inspiring view.
The columnar jointing seen here was formed during the cooling process of magma following volcanic activity. Over countless years, the relentless waves of the Genkai Sea have washed against and sculpted these rocks, resulting in the unique shapes seen today. Ikitsuki Island is a region rich in both natural beauty and history, and these cliffs serve as a vital landmark that embodies the island's pristine natural environment.
The greatest attraction is the view of the 'Misaki Columnar Jointing,' where perfectly aligned, vertical rock pillars repeat endlessly. The rock faces, which seem to plunge directly into the sea, present different expressions depending on the viewing angle. Additionally, from the observation points above the cliffs, you can enjoy a panoramic view of the deep blue Genkai Sea and the white lighthouse standing beautifully against the blue sky, creating a stunning contrast between natural geometry and the ocean.
While the Shiotawara Cliffs show different expressions throughout the year, visiting during a clear day is highly recommended. The contrast between the blue sea, the grey rock faces, and the green vegetation becomes exceptionally vivid under bright sunlight. Midday is the best time for photography, as the intricate details of the columnar joints are most clearly visible. Since the site is located on the west coast, the evening hours are also magical, as the setting sun illuminates the cliffs, creating a dramatic and cinematic landscape.
The primary activity here is the appreciation of natural scenery. There are observation points near the cliffs where you can look down at the powerful, sheer cliffs from a safe distance. The area is also part of the 'Ikitsuki Sunset Way,' a famous seaside driving route that allows you to enjoy breathtaking views while driving along the coastline. A visit to the nearby Obae Lighthouse is also a great way to experience the island's natural beauty through a scenic stroll.
When visiting the cliffs, we highly recommend stopping by the Obae Lighthouse. It is located about a 7-minute drive from the Shiotwara Cliffs area, and it takes about 5 minutes to walk from the parking area to the lighthouse. The lighthouse offers a magnificent view overlooking the entire west coast of Ikitsuki Island. Furthermore, the island offers local delicacies such as 'Kasudose' (a traditional sweet) and 'Hirado Ago Soy Sauce,' making a tour around the island a delicious part of your journey.
The area around the cliffs consists of natural, rugged terrain. As some parts may be uneven or unstable, we recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes. Please note that most signage is in Japanese, so it is helpful to check maps in advance. While some people may enjoy fishing in the area, please prioritize safety and follow all local rules to prevent accidents. As this is a natural site, please respect the environment and maintain proper etiquette for public spaces.
