Shiobara Valley is a magnificent natural landscape located in Nasu-Shiobara City, Tochigi Prefecture. Situated within the Nikko National Park, it offers a variety of spots designed to engage all five senses, including suspension bridges, observation decks, and foot baths. The area features well-maintained walking paths that allow visitors to stroll while admiring the majestic waterfalls and the deep valley scenery. Highlights include the beautiful Tomeharu Falls, the striking Kaiko Falls, and the thrill of crossing the suspension bridges.
The name "Tomeharu Falls" originates from a historical phenomenon where the water would dry up for three months during winter, only to reappear in late spring. Although the water flows continuously today, the name serves as a reminder of the area's natural cycles. The region is also home to unique geological features, such as the "Saruiwa Park," named after rocks that resemble a monkey, showcasing the deep connection between the local topography and its historical naming conventions.
There are several key spots to explore in Shiobara Valley. One of the most popular is the 20-meter-long Tomeharu Suspension Bridge, which offers a unique perspective of the valley from mid-air. Another essential spot is the Kaiko Falls, which boasts a 40-meter drop, accompanied by a viewing platform for spectacular views. Additionally, the walking paths are dotted with observation decks and foot baths, allowing visitors to rest and rejuvenate while surrounded by nature. Since you will be walking through a natural environment, comfortable walking shoes and practical clothing are highly recommended. When using the foot baths or observation decks, please be mindful of the environment. Please note that certain sections (between Tomeharu Falls and the right bank of the Kaiko Suspension Bridge) may be closed due to path maintenance. Additionally, construction on National Route 120 may affect access, so please check the road status in advance. While most of the natural area is free to enter, please carry cash or a card if you plan to use nearby commercial facilities or services.
