The Shinonoi Line Old Line (Akina Abandoned Railway Path) is a unique walking course built on the site of the former JR Shinonoi Line, which was decommissioned in 1988 when a new route opened. Located in the northeastern part of Azumino City, this path allows visitors to walk through history while being completely immersed in nature. The most striking feature is the magnificent avenue of approximately 30,000 zelkova trees that line the path. Since the original railway tracks have been replaced by a walking path, you can enjoy a peaceful hike free from vehicle exhaust and noise.
This route was once part of the JR East Shinonoi Line. The area has a rich history, having served as a signal station since 1961 before the route change in 1988. Today, the section from Akina Station to the old Dai-ni Hakasaka Tunnel has been beautifully maintained by Azumino City as a scenic promenade. As you walk, you can still see remnants of the past, such as the historic brick-lined Urushikubo Tunnel, which evokes the era when steam locomotives once roared through this valley.
The highlight of this course is undoubtedly the vast avenue of zelkova trees. The landscape changes beautifully with the seasons, offering a striking visual experience as you walk the straight path of the former railway. Another must-see is the Urushikubo Tunnel, famous for its artistic brick arch structure, which serves as a significant historical monument of the railway era. Additionally, along the route, you can find old railway signals and sites related to the historic 'Onikoshi Daimyojin' shrine, adding a layer of cultural depth to your walk.
While the trail is accessible year-round, the most spectacular time to visit is during the autumn foliage season in late October. The sight of the 30,000 zelkova trees turning vibrant colors is truly breathtaking. The fresh greenery of spring is also highly recommended for a refreshing experience. Please note that the trail is at an elevation of approximately 550m; mountain weather can change rapidly, so we recommend checking the forecast before your visit.
The primary activity is hiking and leisurely walking. A common route starts from Akina Station, passes through the Urushikubo Tunnel, and continues toward the old Dai-ni Hakasaka Tunnel. Along the way, you can enjoy a slow-paced stroll while observing the remnants of the old railway and nearby recreational areas. For a more comfortable experience, starting from Akina Station is recommended, as the path becomes a gentle downhill slope toward the end.
The area surrounding the course is filled with the rich natural beauty of Azumino. Near Akina Station, you can find a small cafe for a quick break. The area is also close to the 'Keyaki no Mori Nature Park' and the Shiozawa River. If traveling by car, the trail is about a 30-minute drive from the Azumino IC on the Nagano Expressway. Follow Route 403 to reach the parking areas designated for promenade users.
Proper preparation is essential for a pleasant hike. Because the path includes unpaved sections and some rocky terrain, please wear comfortable walking shoes and appropriate outdoor clothing. Be mindful of sudden weather changes due to the elevation. If you use local facilities or parking, please note that cash is often required. It is also important to check transportation methods from Akina Station in advance to ensure a smooth journey.
