Shinmei Shrine is a sacred site located in Osaracho, Toba City, Mie Prefecture. During the Meiji era, several local shrines were consolidated into the current site, which now enshrines twenty-six different deities. The primary deities include Amaterasu Omikami, Ame-no-Minakanushi-no-Kami, and Tamayori-hime-no-Mikoto. This deep-rooted connection to the sea and local traditions has preserved the unique spiritual atmosphere that continues to this day.
The most significant feature of Shinmei Shrine is the Ishigami Shrine (Ishigami-san) within the grounds. The deity is represented by a sacred stone, a tradition of worship that has endured for centuries. Shinmei Shrine offers unique experiences depending on when you visit. A particularly magical event is the 'Yomairi' (Night Visit) held on full moon nights. During this time, the shrine grounds are illuminated by the soft glow of candles, creating a mystical landscape far removed from the daytime experience. Other seasonal highlights include the 'Ishigami-san Spring Festival' on May 7th and the traditional 'Shin-sai Shishi-mai' (Lion Dance) on January 5th, offering a glimpse into authentic Japanese ritual culture.
Visitors can participate in a unique ritual by writing their wishes on special paper and placing it within the 'wish box' at Ishigami-san to offer prayers. The shrine also offers various amulets (omamori) for purchase, some of which can even be sent via mail. These activities allow visitors to engage deeply with Japanese spiritual traditions.
