Shin-Yashima Aquarium is a unique facility located on top of Mount Yashima in Takamatsu, Kagawa Prefecture. Currently, the main facility is closed for a major renovation scheduled to last approximately two years starting from April 7, 2025. During this period, the aquarium is operating as the 'Ichiba Aquarium' located in the former Fruit and Vegetable Building of the Takamatsu Central Wholesale Market. This facility is known for its intimate exhibition style, allowing visitors to feel a close connection with the marine life and the rhythm of the sea. A more advanced and evolved version of the aquarium is planned to reopen in the spring of 2027.
Originally, the aquarium was famous for being a high-altitude aquarium located at an elevation of about 300 meters on Mount Yashima. To undergo a complete modernization, the facility has transitioned into a temporary setup. This 'Ichiba Aquarium' phase represents a transitional period in the aquarium's history, where the goal is to maintain the continuity of marine education and exhibition within the lively, bustling environment of a traditional Japanese wholesale market.
As the 'Ichiba Aquarium,' the current venue utilizes the former Fruit and Vegetable Building of the Takamatsu Central Wholesale Market. While the specific species on display may change depending on the season and operational status, the core philosophy of the original aquarium—providing close-up encounters with marine life—remains. This setup offers a one-of-a-kind atmosphere where the lively energy of a local market coexists with the serene beauty of aquatic exhibits.
The operating hours for the Ichiba Aquarium are from 10:00 to 16:00. It is generally recommended to visit in the early afternoon. While the exhibits are designed to be enjoyed regardless of the season, we recommend checking the schedule for special events, such as traditional Kamishibai (paper storytelling), to enrich your experience. Please note that the facility is closed on Tuesdays (or the following Wednesday if Tuesday is a public holiday), so it is essential to verify the schedule before your visit.
During certain periods, special programs like the 'Sea Creature Kamishibai' (paper storytelling) are held, which are particularly popular for specific age groups. However, please be aware that some activities, such as certain feeding experiences, may be temporarily suspended due to measures against highly pathogenic avian influenza or other health protocols. The current location is within the Takamatsu Central Wholesale Market. Consequently, the surrounding area is a functional part of the market, providing a unique environment where the atmosphere of a working market and the marine exhibits blend together. This is a distinct experience compared to the permanent Yashima area that visitors will see after the renovation is complete.
