Shin Arashiyama Skypark Observatory is an observation facility located in Memuro Town, Kasai District, Hokkaido, offering a 360-degree panoramic view of the vast Tokachi Plain. Situated at a high elevation, the site provides an unobstructed view of the changing natural landscapes throughout the seasons. On clear days, you can see the silhouettes of the Daisetsuzan and Tokachi mountain ranges, as well as the Hidaka Mountains in the distance. At night, the location becomes a spectacular spot for stargazing, where the darkness allows the stars to shine brightly alongside the distant lights of the town. The surrounding area is characterized by a peaceful, pastoral landscape with abundant farmlands.
The area's development as a tourism hub began in the 1960s when skiers first started visiting the region. Originally, the area functioned as a multi-purpose complex that included a municipal ski resort, accommodations, and restaurants. In 1969, to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the founding of Memuro Town, an observatory was established at the current elevation. While it has long been a beloved leisure spot for the local community, it now serves primarily as a destination for travelers wishing to enjoy the profound natural scenery and the vastness of the Hokkaido landscape.
The greatest attraction is the 'patchwork' landscape of the Tokachi Plain. The sight of colorful farmlands arranged in orderly, geometric patterns changes with the seasons, creating a stunning visual tapestry. The high vantage point offers an expansive sense of openness against the backdrop of surrounding mountains. At night, the lack of light pollution makes it an exceptional location for astronomical observation, allowing for incredibly clear views of the Milky Way and constellations. Additionally, the sight of livestock grazing in the nearby fields adds to the idyllic, pastoral charm that defines the Hokkaido experience.
Different times of day offer different experiences. During the day, especially under clear skies, it is ideal for observing the lush greenery and distant mountain ranges. At sunset, the sky transforms into a dreamy gradient of pink and purple, offering a highly emotional and poetic atmosphere. The night is the best time for stargazing. Please note that the facility is closed during the winter season; it is highly recommended to check the seasonal status before visiting. The best time to visit is from May to September, when the vegetation is most vibrant.
Visitors can enjoy a quiet, meditative time in complete harmony with nature. The observatory features benches and railings where you can rest while gazing out over the vast plains. It is a premier location for photography, whether you are capturing the panoramic vistas, the celestial movements of the night sky, or the changing colors of the seasonal crops. There are several facilities nearby for sightseeing and dining. For example, the Meiji Naruhodo Factory Tokachi and the Memuro Farmers Market 'Aina-ya' (which offers local ingredients) are within the vicinity. For accommodation, Hotel Alm Memuro and Fukui Ryokan are located in the surrounding area, making them excellent bases for exploring the wider Tokachi region.
Because the observatory is located on high ground, it can be quite windy. We recommend bringing a light jacket or extra layers, especially if you plan to stay for stargazing at night. While there are no specific fees for parking (street parking is generally available), please be aware that English-language signage or staff assistance may be limited. No advanced reservation is required, but please check the seasonal availability as the site may be closed during winter months.
