Geisho Teiju Sokushin Jutaku is a 5-story municipal apartment building located along Route 45 in Rikuzentakata City, Iwate Prefecture, just east of the Takata Matsubara Tsunami Reconstruction Memorial Park. It is preserved as a 'disaster heritage' site to physically document the impact of the Great East Japan Earthquake. For safety reasons, a fence has been installed around the building, and visitors are requested to observe the exterior structure from outside the perimeter.
This residence plays a vital role in conveying the history of a community that suffered immense damage during the disaster. Historical records indicate that the tsunami reached heights of up to 14.5 meters, and in this specific building, the water submerged up to the 4th floor, with waves reaching even the floor level of the 5th story. It is maintained today as a crucial historical monument to ensure that future generations understand the true scale and power of the tsunami.
The most striking feature is the visible structure of the 5-story building and the clear marks left by the floodwaters. The site is located very close to the Takata Matsubara Tsunami Reconstruction Memorial Park. Since it is situated along National Route 45, it is easily accessible by car. We recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes. You can use the nearby parking areas to access the site. Please note that entering the building is strictly forbidden; observation is only permitted from outside the safety fence.
