Shimonada Station is a station on the JR Yosan Line located in Iyo City, Ehime Prefecture. It is a ground-level station with a single platform, situated directly in front of the vast Seto Inland Sea. The station retains a nostalgic atmosphere with its wooden structure, which has been carefully maintained and renovated over the years. The proximity to the coastline makes it a spectacular spot where the view from the train and the station platform itself are truly unforgettable.
Shimonada Station has a rich history dating back to its opening in 1935. While it once featured a two-track island platform, it was restructured into its current single-platform layout following the opening of new lines. Inside the station, you can still find remnants of the past, such as the ticket window from the era when manual ticketing was performed. Additionally, a charming enamel sign with the name "Shimonada" written in Japanese was installed by local enthusiasts in 2014, representing the connection between the station and the local community. The station also holds a musical legacy; since 1986, the "Sunset Platform Concert" has been held every September, celebrating the station's unique atmosphere.
The most striking feature is the view of the Seto Inland Sea directly from the platform. Because the ocean is right in front of the station, there is an incredible sense of openness when standing on the platform or watching a train arrive. The wooden waiting area inside the station allows visitors to soak in the historical ambiance. Other highlights include the vintage enamel signs and the way the colors of the sea and sky shift depending on the season and time of day.
The scenery around Shimonada changes beautifully with the seasons. The summer months (July to September) are particularly striking, as the bright sunlight makes the blue ocean appear exceptionally vivid. During the evening, the sky and sea often turn a deep orange, creating a highly emotional and picturesque landscape that is often celebrated in local events. While your stay on the platform will depend on the train schedule, the changing colors of the landscape are a highlight of the experience.
Traveling by train itself is a core part of the experience here. For example, when traveling from the nearby Iyo-Unada Station to Shimonada Station, you can enjoy the scenic coastal views from the train as it moves along the elevated tracks. Visitors can also spend time appreciating the historical architecture of the station. Please note that as this is an unstaffed station, your time at the station will be dictated by the train'’s operating schedule.
The area around the station includes scenic spots such as Futami Seaside Park (near Unada Station). The coastline between Shimonada and Iyo-Unada is a highly recommended route for scenic train travel. While there is a small parking area near the station, the number of spaces is limited, so it is advisable to check the local situation before arriving.
