Shimeitei Observatory is located at an altitude of 630 meters in Kosaka Town, Akita Prefecture. This location offers a unique perspective where the shape of Lake Towada appears to be a heart. The observatory is highly accessible, situated less than a 1-minute walk from the parking area, making it an easy stop for travelers. It is widely recognized as a premier spot for observing the breathtaking scenery of Lake Towada surrounded by untouched nature.
In 1927 (Showa 2), a stone monument was erected to commemorate this location being selected as one of the "Eight Views of Japan" in the lake category. This monument serves as a historical testament to the long-standing appreciation of this landscape. The surrounding area functions much like a natural park, where the preservation and public enjoyment of this scenic beauty have been maintained for many years.
The most striking visual feature is the view of Lake Towada appearing in a heart shape. To experience this best, it is highly recommended to go up to the second floor of the observatory via the stairs; however, the lake can also be viewed from the first-floor area. The stone monument commemorating the Eight Views of Japan is another important element that adds historical depth to your visit. Depending on the season, you can witness the changing colors of the surrounding vegetation and the shifting expressions of the lake surface.
Shimeitei Observatory offers different scenery throughout the year. From May to October, the colors of the trees and the lake surface change beautifully with the seasons. Please note that the observatory is closed during the winter season from mid-November to late April, so-check the schedule before visiting. During daylight hours, the shape of the lake and the surrounding topography are most clearly visible.
The observatory provides a panoramic view of the entire Lake Towada area. Since the walk from the parking lot is very short, it is an ideal stop during a scenic drive. The surrounding environment includes paths suitable for a brief stroll through nature. Many visitors come here specifically to capture the iconic heart-shaped lake in photographs.
The observatory is located along the Jukai Line, approximately a 1-minute drive from the Hakkapass Observatory. It is a key part of the scenic driving routes around Lake Towada and is situated within a well-maintained natural park area.
As the observatory is at an altitude of 630 meters, temperatures may be lower than in the lowlands. Please prepare appropriate clothing for the season. Note that the observatory is closed during the winter period (mid-November to late April). While there are no fees for using the observatory itself, please carry cash or a card if you plan to use nearby facilities. English signage is limited, so it is helpful to check information in advance. Photography of the scenery and the monument is permitted. Regarding accessibility, please be aware that the second floor is accessible via stairs, which may present a challenge for those with mobility issues.
