Shimane Winery, located in Izumo City, Shimane Prefecture, is a comprehensive facility that integrates wine production, tasting, sales, and dining. The complex features several distinct areas: the wine brewing hall with its striking Southern European-style architecture, 'Bacchus' for tastings and shopping, and 'BBQ House Chateau Misan,' where you can enjoy local delicacies like Shimane Wagyu beef. Beyond just tasting, the facility serves as a hub for introducing the diverse wine culture of the Shimane region through educational tours and local specialty shops.
The roots of Shimane Winery date back to the 1950s. The facility was originally established as a response to the need for fruit processing to mitigate quality loss caused by heavy rainfall in the San'in region. By the 1980s, the facility evolved into a comprehensive tourism-based winery, building on three pillars: the primary industry (grape cultivation through contract farming), the secondary industry (wine production), and the tertiary industry (tourism services). Today, it plays a vital role in producing high-quality 'Shimane Wine' and promoting local agricultural products.

The facility offers many spots to visually understand the winemaking process. In the brewing hall, you can observe the production line, including 99 indoor and outdoor tanks and the latest bottling equipment. At the 'Bacchus' tasting room, approximately 10 varieties of Shimane wines are available for tasting. For those who do not consume alcohol, a dedicated tasting corner for local grape juice is also provided. Additionally, the shop offers a wide selection of wines alongside various local specialties and original products.
The facility operates year-round, but the experience changes with the seasons. During the summer months (June to September), the BBQ House extends its operating hours until 7:30 PM, allowing for a relaxing evening meal. From May to September, the selection of local ingredients and wine lineups changes alongside the seasonal shifts. Visitors can plan their day by visiting the brewing hall and shop during the bright daylight hours, and enjoying a hearty BBQ in the late afternoon or evening.
This is more than just a place to eat and drink; it is an educational experience. You can learn about the winemaking process for free at the brewing hall. At the 'Chateau Misan' BBQ House, you can enjoy set menus featuring Shimane Wagyu beef paired perfectly with local wine. The theme of 'local production for local consumption' is central here, offering luxurious lunches and dinners that combine Shimane wine, beef, and rice. The area is also family-friendly, offering light snacks like soft-serve ice cream and croquettes.
Shimane Winery is conveniently located just a 5-minute drive from the famous Izumo Taisha Grand Shrine. It is an ideal destination for lunch or shopping during your pilgrimage. Situated along National Route 431, it is easily accessible by car. The surrounding area is dotted with historical sites of Izumo, making the winery a perfect addition to your sightseeing itinerary.
As the facility covers a large area, we recommend wearing comfortable clothing suitable for walking around the brewing hall and the shop. If you plan to use the BBQ House, advanced reservations are recommended (especially for tours). Please follow all signage regarding photography within the facility. Ample parking is available, including spaces for private cars (350 spots) and large buses (25 spots).
