The Shimanami Kaido is a breathtaking route spanning approximately 140 km, consisting of beautiful coastlines and bridges that connect Onomichi in Hiroshima Prefecture to Imabari in Ehime Prefecture. Seven large bridges link the various islands floating on the calm surface of the Seto Inland Sea. This route is celebrated as a 'holy land' for cyclists from all over the world. Beyond the extraordinary sensation of cycling over the ocean, visitors can immerse themselves in the stunning beauty of the many islands, historic structures, and the sophisticated engineering of the modern bridges. It is a unique landscape where nature and human-made marvels exist in perfect harmony.
This area has long developed as a vital maritime transport hub for the Seto Inland Sea. Along the route, you will find industrial heritage sites that supported Japan's modernization and various historical buildings. For instance, there are elements that tell the story of the region's progress, such as architecture related to the history of local copper mining and designs influenced by renowned architects like Kenzo Tange. The islands themselves have nurtured unique local cultures, and the design of the bridges and the traditional streetscapes reflect the evolution of regional history and technology.

The greatest charm of the Shimanami Kaido lies in its magnificent bridges. The journey begins with the Shin-Onomichi Bridge and leads through the Inujima Bridge, Ikuchi Bridge, Tatara Bridge, Omishima Bridge, Hakata/Oshima Bridges, and culminates in the spectacular Kurushima Kaikyo Bridge. The Kurushima Kaikyo Bridge, in particular, is famous for its immense scale and beauty. The route also serves as a living museum of civil engineering, with various bridges and structures that showcase the transition of technical skills over time. Visitors can also explore the cultural depth of the islands, including sites related to the Besshi Copper Mine and beautiful architectural landmarks.
While the Shimanami Kaido offers different charms throughout the year, the best time for cycling is during spring (March to May) or autumn (September to November), when the winds are gentle and the temperatures are pleasant. A ride through the refreshing spring breeze is especially wonderful. The scenery also changes depending on the time of day: an early morning ride offers serenity and a beautiful sunrise, while an evening ride allows you to witness a stunning sunset over the Seto Inland Sea. At night, some bridges are illuminated, creating a magical atmosphere.

The primary activity is, of course, cycling. You can enjoy a leisurely ride through the islands using rental bicycles, experiencing the exhilarating feeling of crossing the sea. It is also a wonderful opportunity for a 'cultural journey,' observing the architectural works of Kenzo Tange or the retro charm of older bridges to feel the history of Japan's modernization. Exploring the small islands and tasting the local food culture will further enrich your travel experience.
The route begins in Onomichi (Hiroshima) and ends in Imabari (Ehime). Onomichi is famous for its charming old streets and temple tours, while the Imari area is known for its high-quality towels and citrus products. The area is part of the Seto Inland Sea island hopping network, which includes other scenic routes like the Tobishima Kaido and Yumeshima Kaido. Even if you step slightly off the main cycling path, you will find abundant natural beauty and historical landscapes nearby.
When cycling, wear comfortable athletic clothing and bring a hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen to protect yourself from the sun. Staying hydrated with plenty of water is essential. While major facilities and shops accept credit cards, many small shops and local stalls on the islands are cash-only; please carry Japanese Yen for smooth transactions. While some English signage is available at major tourist spots, we recommend using a map or translation app for navigation. It is highly recommended to make reservations in advance for bicycle rentals and accommodations. Please follow all traffic rules and be mindful of pedestrians and vehicles to ensure a safe and enjoyable trip.
